Luke 1 vs 17-25

Luke Chapter 1 Verse 17
•Notice, Gabriel says that John will go before Him, before Jesus, the promised Messiah, in the spirit and power of Elijah. He does not say that the spirit and power of Elijah will be in John. Do you see that? This is important. John will be filled with the spirit and power of One much greater than Elijah. We’ve already been told that John will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and if that is so, then there is no more room for any other! (This is the greatest benefit in life of being a Christian, to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The greatest benefit in death is to be welcomed into eternal life.)
•What does this mean then? This statement is two things. It is a declaration of prophecy and it is a breaking of silence. Malachi 3:1-3, “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the Lord of hosts. “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord, an offering in righteousness.”
•So, the prophecy given of the coming Messiah along with a prophecy of one to prepare the way before Him. Malachi 4:5-6, the very end of the Old Testament, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” Essentially this was the last thing said or given to Israel before 400 years of silence. The gap between Malachi Chapter 4 and Matthew Chapter 1. So, this statement is a breaking of silence and it is a declaration of prophecy!
•Who was Elijah? What is the spirit and power that he wielded? Elijah was a prophet of God during some of the darkest times of the nation’s history. Ahab, the worst king of Israel, was ruling. He had married a princess of Sidon, the daughter of the King of Tyre (also known as Michelin, HA!), Jezebel, who’s name today is still a byword even in our culture. Elijah spoke truth in time of immediate crisis in the land. Tremendous evil to overcome that would only get worse before it ever improved. Elijah’s work was to reveal the true God to Israel in a time of growing evil. Elijah cried out against the wilderness that Israel had become, declaring that Israel should turn back to the One True God. This is precisely the role and the spirit and the power that John the Baptist would walk in as well…
•So, was John the Baptist the reincarnated (or should I say returned) Elijah? No, as we see in John 1:21, “They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.”” And yet Jesus said of John the Baptist in Matthew 11:14, “If you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.” Declaring that John the Baptist is indeed the fulfillment of the Malachi prophecy.
•And so, what is it in a nutshell? I want to make just this one last point. What is the spirit and power of Elijah that became also the spirit and power of John the Baptist? Simply that in the midst of everyone else’s disobedience, foolishness, unjustness…in the midst of everyone else unprepared for the Lord, He would be the one. No matter what the nation was doing, He would do what is right. This, to me, is a critical element and decision in the heart and life of one that truly seeks to serve the Lord.
Luke Chapter 1 Verse 18
•Ok, ready to be depressed adults? Zacharias wasn’t what I would call extremely old! Numbers 8:23-25, “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “This is what pertains to the Levites: From twenty-five years old and above one may enter to perform service in the work of the tabernacle of meeting; and at the age of fifty years they must cease performing this work, and shall work no more.”’ So, Zach says, “I’m an old man…,” but he’s in his 40’s probably, ha!! And poor Elizabeth, well advanced in years…same for her. SO, encouragement alert! If you’re over the age of 50, Biblically you’re ancient! HA!!
•The real point is that Zach’s reaction, a righteous man, blameless before God, his surprising reaction is…well, unbelief! Why? Same reason so many miss out on what God wants to do in their lives, ministries, marriages and situations…Zacharias stacked up what he heard against his circumstance, not against what God can do.
Luke Chapter 1 Verse 19
•What carries more weight? “I am Gabriel who stands in the presence of God,” or, “but I am an old man?” I continually see this played out in the lives of so many…
Luke Chapter 1 Verse 20
•This word for mute in the Greek is literally, “dumb.” Well more precisely, “in one’s silence because dumb.” HA! Why am I not willing to trust God’s at times? Because dumb. HA! I like that. In all seriousness, this is real talk, reading the Word of God, knowing the Word of God and yet not believing the Word of God, Christian…makes us dumb! Do dumb things!!
•God has said that as we follow Him, Romans 8:28, “God will work all things out, we know that all things work together for the good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” But we do the dumbest things thinking that God is not going to apply this verse to our marriage, ministry, relationship or situation.
•God’s Word for marriages, man love your wife…woman respect your husband. All done. Gabriel stands up…walks out, we’re all done here…that’s all you need…and lovelessness yet abounds…a husband that loves his wife is rare…and disrespect runs rampant as she after years still doesn’t understand what hurts him and therefore harms the marriage…a respectful wife is rare…when the direction is so simple. But we’re dummies.
•Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make every one of your paths straight.” Lives end up all crooked and man find dead ends and cliffs…why? Didn’t believe God’s Word…because dumb.
•I love using this illustration and I’ve used it a bunch because its just so simple and easy to understand, my 10-year-old could have all of the wisdom of his 40-year-old dad if he just obeyed me. I say to my kids often, “Think less, obey more,” when they hesitate to act on what I’ve told them to do…because that is exactly the way I want them to obey God. The outsider scoffs and says that’s stupid. “You want your kids to not think and to just obey?” Yup. When it comes to God’s Word…yes I do. You’re welcome to scoff, and you’re welcome to be dumb. If they learn that…my kids will have the wisdom of God flowing through their lives…
•God is good. He loves you. He’s nothing like the love we know in the flesh He is pure and good and true and just and faithful. Fix it all right now…stop fighting the Word of God because of your circumstance or your own understanding and just be smart…trust the Lord. His Word will be fulfilled in its own time…, “but but but my circumstance…,” trust God!
Luke Chapter 1 Verses 21 – 23
•The priest would finish the hour-long service in the temple and then he would exit the temple and stand on the steps of the temple and pronounce the Numbers 6:24-26 blessing upon the people. Zach comes out this day, late…and says nothing. In fact, he calls to them all, perhaps with a sense of urgency or something to say, but is unable to speak. This must have been quite the scene for sure…
•One thing though I want to point out, even in the midst of a catastrophe, a personal catastrophe for Zacharias specifically, we read here in verse 23, “As soon as the days of his service were completed…” Even in a catastrophe, he still does his job. Sometimes I feel as if I am alone in this on this planet and that’s ok, so what I’m about to say you may not care about at all and I’ve already learned to accept that, I’m not ok with it, but I accept it…no matter what has happened or what has gone right or wrong, we still have a job to do as Christians. We still need to do our jobs, the commitments and accountabilities that we have allowed in our lives, no matter the catastrophe, the ball cannot drop.
•My spirit has been especially stirred in me just recently as I’ve learned that there are folks that aren’t coming to church because of some personal convenience. I’m so extremely hurt by this. What about the people here? What about those that do come? Do you not know that you are here not for your own comfort but to serve these precious people? Do you not know that serving God will frustrate you, harm you, inconvenience you, anger you…how is it that you’ve left the rest of us on the battle field to fight without you? This is why Paul broke ties with Barnabas…it was over Mark who for some reason of personal catastrophe, left Paul to fight alone…and so it should be said.
•We are followers of Jesus Christ. The One who went to the cross and paid a penalty that was not His forsaking His own self for the sake of others, for the sake of me. He is who I follow. To Him I belong and it is to Him that I report. I represent HIM! The work cannot go undone. Every commitment, every accountability point in my life will be met because that is my decision…come heaven or high water…this, as Christians, IS OUR CHARGE. Zacharias was struck, mute, confused, excited, overwhelmed…and yet he did not go straight home to even share this with his wife, he finished the word God had entrusted to him.
•I know I’m full-bore in this and I may be alone in it and I accept that…I do not like that…but I accept it and I’ll stay on the battlefield…and you know what, even if I end up overwhelmed, I know that God will provide…I think of Elijah on Mt. Carmel. I think of Moses with the Red Sea in front of him and the entire Egyptian army behind him. I think of Jesus, alone in the Garden when the entire Roman guard was forced to their backsides at the proclamation that Jesus is Lord. I will know the faithfulness of God in that way only if I am alone…so my flesh hates it…yet my spirit cries out for it!
Luke Chapter 1 Verses 24 – 25
•A couple things here as we close today and next week we will change characters as Mary enters the story…it says here that Elizabeth conceived which means that Zach went home and partnered with God to bring about the promise of God. God’s promises are right here for us, right here for you, and you have an active role to play in each one of them.
•Elizabeth hid herself for five months not to hide her pregnancy…you don’t really show in the first months…God was fulfilling His Word to her as well and this was no doubt perhaps the best five months of her life as she flourished in her faith. Having prayed the same prayer as Zach for so long…having been scorned by her family and people for being barren, God had redeemed her…she wanted to share life with no one else but the Lord.
•And one last point here…she was not only a good woman, blameless in the eyes of God, but she was also a good wife, a good friend to her husband. Did he say the right words to her, spend the time with her, engaging in her cares and conversation of her day and that led her to give herself to him? No…he was mute…and yet she conceived. That is respect on display…so much already in these first parts of this first chapter of the Gospel of Luke…and yet the best is yet ahead…and the same will be for me and for you and for anyone that will choose to place their lives in the hands of a perfect God…that means trust…even if you’re old like Zach…to see the impossibility of the circumstance and yet trust God at His Word!



Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículo 17

· Note, Gabriel dice que Juan irá delante de Él, antes de Jesús, el Mesías prometido, en el espíritu y poder de Elías. Él no dice que el espíritu y el poder de Elijah estarán en Juan. ¿Ves eso? Esto es importante. Juan se llenará del espíritu y el poder de Uno mucho más grande que Elías. Ya nos han dicho que Juan será lleno del Espíritu Santo, y si eso es así, ¡entonces no hay más espacio para ningún otro! (Este es el mayor beneficio en la vida de ser cristiano: al ser lleno del Espíritu Santo. El mayor beneficio en la muerte es ser bienvenido en la vida eterna).

· ¿Entonces, qué significa esto? Esta afirmación es dos cosas. Es una declaración de profecía y es una ruptura del silencio. Malaquías 3: 1-3: “He aquí, yo envío a mi mensajero, y él preparará el camino delante de mí. Y el Señor, a quien buscas, vendrá repentinamente a Su templo, incluso el Mensajero del pacto, en quien te deleitas. He aquí, él viene ”, dice el Señor de los anfitriones celestiales. “¿Pero quién puede soportar el día de su venida? ¿Y quién puede pararse cuando Él aparece? Porque Él es como el fuego de un refinador y como el jabón de los lavadores. Se sentará como refinador y purificador de plata; Él purificará a los hijos de Leví, y los purgará como oro y plata, para que puedan ofrecer al Señor, una ofrenda en justicia ".

· Entonces, la profecía dada del Mesías venidero junto con una profecía de uno para preparar el camino delante de Él. Malaquías 4: 5-6, el muy al final del Antiguo Testamento, “He aquí, te enviaré a Elías el profeta antes de la venida del día gran y terrible del Señor. Y él volverá los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y los corazones de los hijos a los padres, para que yo no venga y golpee la tierra con una maldición”. Esencialmente, esto fue lo último que le dijeron o le dieron a Israel antes de los 400 años de silencio. La brecha entre el Capítulo 4 de Malaquías y el Capítulo 1 de Mateo. Entonces, ¡esta declaración es una ruptura del silencio y es una declaración de profecía!

· Quien era Elías? ¿Cuál es el espíritu y el poder que ejercía? Elías fue un profeta de Dios durante algunos de los momentos más oscuros de la historia de la nación. Acab, el peor rey de Israel, estaba gobernando. Se había casado con una princesa de Sidón, la hija del Rey de Tiro (también conocida como Michelin, JA!), Jezabel, cuyo nombre hoy en día sigue siendo notoria incluso en nuestra cultura. Elías dijo la verdad en tiempos de crisis inmediata en la tierra. Enorme mal que superar que solo empeoraría antes de mejorar. El trabajo de Elías fue revelar el verdadero Dios a Israel en un momento de creciente maldad. Elías gritó contra el desierto en el que se había convertido Israel, declarando que Israel debería volver al Único Dios Verdadero. Este es precisamente el papel, el espíritu y el poder en el que Juan el Bautista también entraría ...

· Entonces, ¿fue Juan el Bautista el reencarnado (o debería decir que regresó) Elías? No, como vemos en Juan 1:21: "Le preguntaron:" ¿Qué, pues? ¿Eres Elías? Él dijo: "No lo soy". Y, sin embargo, Jesús dijo de Juan el Bautista en Mateo 11:14: "Si estás dispuesto a recibirlo, él es Elías que vendrá". Declarar que Juan el Bautista es de hecho el cumplimiento de la profecía de Malaquías.

· Y entonces, ¿qué es en pocas palabras? Quiero hacer solo este último punto. ¿Cuál es el espíritu y el poder de Elías que se convirtió también en el espíritu y el poder de Juan el Bautista? Simplemente que en medio de la desobediencia, la necedad, y la injusticia de todos los demás ... en medio de todos los que no estén preparados para el Señor, Él sería el indicado. No importa lo que la nación estaba haciendo, Él haría lo correcto. Esto, para mí, es un elemento crítico y una decisión en el corazón y la vida de alguien que realmente busca servir al Señor.

Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículo 18

· Ok, ¿listos para ser adultos deprimidos? ¡Zacharias no era lo que yo llamaría extremadamente viejo! Números 8: 23-25: “Entonces el Señor le habló a Moisés, diciéndole:“ Esto es lo que pertenece a los levitas: a partir de los veinticinco años de edad, uno puede entrar a prestar servicio en la obra del tabernáculo de reunión; y a la edad de cincuenta años deben dejar de realizar este trabajo, y no trabajarán más "." Entonces, Zach dice: "Soy un hombre viejo ...", ¡pero probablemente esté en sus 40 años, ja!” Y la pobre Elizabeth, bien avanzada en años ... lo mismo para ella. ¡ASÍ, ánimo de alerta! Si tienes más de 50 años, ¡bíblicamente eres antiguo! ¡¡JA!!

El punto real es que la reacción de Zach, un hombre justo, sin culpa ante Dios, su reacción sorprendente es ... bueno, ¡incredulidad! ¿Por qué? La misma razón por la que muchos se pierden en lo que Dios quiere hacer en sus vidas, ministerios, matrimonios y situaciones ... Zacarías acumuló lo que escuchó contra su circunstancia, no contra lo que Dios puede hacer.

Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículo 19

· ¿Qué lleva más peso? "Soy Gabriel, que está en la presencia de Dios" o "¿pero soy un hombre viejo?" Continuamente veo que esto se pasa en la vida de tantos ...
Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículo 20

· Esta palabra para mudo en griego es literalmente "tonto". Bueno, más precisamente, "en silencio porque tonto". ¡JA! ¿Por qué no estoy dispuesto a confiar en Dios a veces? Porque tonto ¡JA! Me gusta eso. Con toda seriedad, esta es una verdadera charla, leer la Palabra de Dios, conocer la Palabra de Dios y, sin embargo, no creer en la Palabra de Dios, cristiano ... nos hace tontos. ¡Haz cosas tontas!

· Dios ha dicho que a medida que lo seguimos, Romanos 8:28, "Dios resolverá todas las cosas, sabemos que todas las cosas funcionan juntas para el bien de los que aman a Dios, a los que son llamados según Su propósito". Pero hacemos las cosas más tontas pensando que Dios no va a aplicar este versículo a nuestro matrimonio, ministerio, relación o situación.

· La Palabra de Dios para los matrimonios, el hombre ama a tu esposa ... la mujer respeta a tu esposo. Todo listo. Gabriel se pone de pie ... sale, ya terminamos aquí ... eso es todo lo que necesita ... y la falta de amor aún abunda ... un esposo que ama a su esposa es raro ... y la falta de respeto corre desenfrenada ya que ella después de años todavía no entiende lo que le duele y por lo tanto daña el matrimonio ... una esposa respetuosa es rara ... cuando la dirección es tan simple. Pero somos tontos.

· Proverbios 3: 5-6, “Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón y no te apoyes en tu propio entendimiento. Reconócelo en todos tus caminos y Él enderezará cada uno de tus caminos ”. Las vidas terminan torcidas y el hombre encontrar calles sin salida y acantilados ... ¿por qué? No creía en la Palabra de Dios ... porque tonto.

· Me encanta usar esta ilustración y la he usado mucho porque es muy simple y fácil de entender, mi hijo de 10 años podría tener toda la sabiduría de su padre de 40 años si solo me obedeciera. A menudo les digo a mis hijos: "Piensen menos, obedezcan más" cuando dudan en actuar según lo que les he dicho que hagan ... porque esa es exactamente la forma en que quiero que obedezcan a Dios. El extraño se burla y dice que es tonto. "¿Quieres que tus hijos no piensen y simplemente obedezcan?" Sip. Cuando se trata de la Palabra de Dios ... sí, asi es. Eres bienvenido a burlarte, y eres bienvenido a ser tonto. Si aprenden eso ... mis hijos tendrán la sabiduría de Dios fluyendo a través de sus vidas ...

· Dios es bueno. Él te ama. Él no se parece en nada al amor que conocemos en la carne, Él es puro, bueno, verdadero, justo y fiel. Arregle todo ahora ... deje de luchar contra la Palabra de Dios debido a su circunstancia o su propio entendimiento y sea inteligente ... confíe en el Señor. Su Palabra se cumplirá a su debido tiempo ..., "pero pero pero mi circunstancia ...", ¡confía en Dios!

Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículos 21 - 23

· El sacerdote terminaría el servicio de una hora en el templo y luego saldría del templo y se pararía en los escalones del templo y pronunciaría la bendición de Números 6: 24-26 sobre la gente. Zach sale este día, tarde ... y no dice nada. De hecho, los llama a todos, quizás con un sentido de urgencia o algo que decir, pero no puede hablar. Esta debe haber sido una escena segura ...

· Una cosa, aunque quiero señalar, incluso en medio de una catástrofe, una catástrofe personal para Zacarías específicamente, leemos aquí en el versículo 23, "Tan pronto como se completaron los días de su servicio ..." Incluso en una catástrofe, Él todavía hace su trabajo. A veces siento que estoy solo en este planeta y eso está bien, así que lo que voy a decir es que quizás no te importe nada y ya he aprendido a aceptar eso, no estoy de acuerdo con eso, pero lo acepto ... no importa lo que haya sucedido o lo que haya salido bien o mal, todavía tenemos un trabajo que hacer como cristianos. Todavía tenemos que hacer nuestro trabajo, los compromisos y responsabilidades que hemos permitido en nuestras vidas, sin importar la catástrofe, la pelota no puede caer.

· Mi espíritu se ha conmovido especialmente en mí recientemente, cuando supe que hay personas que no vienen a la iglesia debido a alguna conveniencia personal. Estoy muy dolido por esto. ¿Qué hay de la gente aquí? ¿Qué pasa con los que sí vienen? ¿No sabes que estás aquí no para tu propia comodidad sino para servir a estas personas preciosas? ¿No sabes que servir a Dios te frustrará, te hará daño, te incomodará, te enojará ... cómo es que nos has dejado al resto de nosotros en el campo de batalla para luchar sin ti? Es por eso que Pablo rompió lazos con Bernabé ... fue por Marco quien, por alguna razón de catástrofe personal, dejó a Pablo para luchar solo ... y eso debería decirse.

· Somos seguidores de Jesucristo. Él que fue a la cruz y pagó un castigo que no fue suyo que se abandonara a sí mismo por el bien de los demás, por el bien de mí. Él es a quien sigo. A Él le pertenezco y es a Él a quien le informo. Lo represento! El trabajo tiene que hacerse! Cada compromiso, cada punto de rendición de cuentas en mi vida se cumplirá porque esa es mi decisión ... ven al cielo o al agua ... esto, como cristianos, ES NUESTRO CARGO. Zacarías estaba golpeado, mudo, confundido, emocionado, abrumado ... y, sin embargo, no fue directamente a su casa para compartir esto con su esposa, terminó la obra que Dios le había confiado.

· Sé que soy muy entusiasta en esto y puedo estar solo en eso y lo acepto... sino que no me gusta eso ... pero lo acepto y me quedaré en el campo de batalla ... y sabes qué, incluso si yo terminar abrumado, sé que Dios proveerá ... Pienso en Elías en el Monte Carmelo. Pienso en Moisés con el Mar Rojo frente a él y todo el ejército egipcio detrás de él. Pienso en Jesús, solo en el jardín cuando toda la guardia romana se vio obligada a retroceder ante la proclamación de que Jesús es el Señor. Conoceré la fidelidad de Dios de esa manera solo si estoy solo ... así que mi carne lo odia ... ¡pero mi espíritu lo clama!

Lucas Capítulo 1 Versículos 24-25

· Un par de cosas aquí mientras cerramos hoy y la próxima semana cambiaremos de personaje cuando Maria entre en la historia ... dice aquí que Elizabeth concibió, lo que significa que Zach se fue a casa y se asoció con Dios para cumplir la promesa de Dios. Las promesas de Dios están aquí para nosotros, aquí para usted, y usted tiene un papel activo que hacer en cada una de ellas.

· Elizabeth se escondió durante cinco meses para no ocultar su embarazo ... realmente no se muestra en los primeros meses ... Dios también estaba cumpliendo Su Palabra con ella y este fue sin duda quizás los mejores cinco meses de su vida mientras florecía su fe. Habiendo rezado la misma oración que Zach durante tanto tiempo ... habiendo sido despreciada por su familia y su gente por ser estéril, Dios la había redimido ... ella quería compartir la vida con nadie más que el Señor.

· Y un último punto aquí ... ella no solo era una buena mujer, sin culpa a los ojos de Dios, sino que también era una buena esposa, una buena amiga para su esposo. ¿Le dijo las palabras correctas, pasó el tiempo con ella, ocupándose de sus preocupaciones y conversaciones de su día y eso la llevó a entregarse a él? No ... él estaba mudo ... y sin embargo ella concibió. Eso es respeto en exhibición ... tanto en estas primeras partes de este primer capítulo del Evangelio de Lucas ... y, sin embargo, lo mejor está por venir ... y lo mismo será para mí y para ti y para cualquiera que elija colocar su vida en las manos de un Dios perfecto ... eso significa confianza ... ¡incluso si eres viejo como Zach ... para ver la imposibilidad de las circunstancias y, sin embargo, confiar en Dios en Su Palabra!
