Revelation 3 vs 7 - Philadelphia Part 1

The faithful church.
Revelation Chapter 3 Verse 7a
•Philadelphia is the church located at a city named for love. Specifically, brotherly love as phileo is the Greek word for just that, familial love or brotherly love or sisterly love. And I think that is perfect because this is also known as the faithful church and or the missional church.
•On the final night of freedom that Jesus had on this earth before being falsely accused, brutalized and crucified, He rose up from the table, laid aside His outerwear, what we would say today, His hoodie, and in an act of superior humility (because humility is superior), He washed the feet of His disciples, Judas included. But then something changed, something happened, and Judas departed…
•After that Jesus, no doubt vexed in His Spirit, saddened by the failure of someone He loves, Jesus lifted His voice once more and we find this in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” They understood what He was saying…that the people of God will be marked by their mercy, by their grace, by their forgiveness, by their love…even when someone they love fails in betrayal.
•John caught the gist. He wrote in 1 John 4:20, “If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar…” Philadelphia is the faithful church, the church of brotherly loved…perfectly named, why? Because walking in love and walking in faith are inseparable. They themselves are brothers.
•The city got its name because of this brotherly love, in fact. It was established in 189 BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamos at which time he names the city after and for the love of his own brother, Attalus Philadelphus II (who would succeed him as the king of Pergamos).
•It’s also known as the missional church because it represents the period of church history in which the church began again to proliferate Jesus throughout the world only this time not by the tip of the sword but by the love and grace of Jesus.
•(Speaking of missional) Philadelphia itself as a city was founded to expand the Greek culture and language to surrounding regions and within only 200 years a neighboring city called Lydia had completely adopted both the Greek culture and language, forsaking their own.
•Also, interesting and relevant, Philadelphia was situated in a subterranean volcanic area which made the soil rich and the waters naturally warm. It was a city known for its world-famous vineyards and wines and hot springs. People would travel to Philadelphia to enjoy life, get away…to rest.
•I’ll tell you this, overcome your own flesh, the ways of this world, the demands of our fallen nature, take up your cross and follow the Lord, wash the feet of your enemies and betrayers, make your brand and character one of love and grace and mercy and Jesus will live on through you…you will be a place of refuge and rest for your brother and the bonus, the bonus of the faithful, the loving, the out-reaching missional person…is that you yourself will endure the superiority of closeness with the Lord and the freedom of divine subterranean joy…joy unspeakable, unmovable, inexhaustible, indescribable so it even stays sort of a secret just between you and the Lord…this is the love and understanding that John caught the gist of that day…
•That who God was asking him to become, who God wanted him to be, in that moment, became who John wanted himself to be. Just like we talked about last week. Who God wants me to be, man it is step one…I want to make that in my own heart of hearts who I want to be…and then it will just work itself out as I walk with the Lord and follow Him. I am convinced that anything other than that is not Biblical faithfulness…but is something else, sensual and counterfeit.
•This church is still on the scene today but not so much a building or a denomination or a movement or a name. This is the church comprised of people from all sides, corners and angles of Christianity that desire to love God more, worship God not only in church services but in easy and difficult moments…this is the church pure…the people that make God’s commands to love Him and love others their heart beat’s rhythms…no one to impress, no agenda to push…ferocious against their own flesh and sin and prayerfully passionate about grace upon the flesh and sin of others…the cross of Christ is their meaning of life…they love like He loves…the faithful church…
•Historically, it represents a period of time beginning around 1800 with who is called the originator of the modern missional movement of the church, a man named William Carey. A Baptist parishioner and cobbler in England whose heart was stirred by the Lord while reading Isaiah 54:2-3 in front of his church, “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities alive!” The church was reviving!!
•He packed up, closed his shop and traveled to India for the sake of sharing the love and hope of salvation through Jesus! Something that hadn’t happened since Paul in his day! What was happening? Revival, the crusted over heart of the church was beating again and just like a bride in love with her groom, the church awoke to a desire to be close to the Lord, to return to simplicity of relationship and to do what God had asked them to do…take responsibility for the Great Commission!
•I heard this week, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” I like that. God has given us a great calling in this world, each and every one of us, but it is as Vidal Sassoon once said, “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary!” Where is the church that takes responsibility for God’s commands? That is the faithful church!! "Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." -- Albert Einstein
•Carey set the example! He showed them and us that you don’t have to be skilled, gifted or special to be used in the Kingdom! God is simply looking for simple men and simple women faithful enough to simply so what He has asked! The greatest ability is availability.
•The church in Philadelphia speaks of this age of church history that begun through powerful and selfless faithfulness! (Is there any other?) It was through men and women like Carey in India and Hudson Taylor in China, D.L. Moody in America and C.H. Spurgeon in London that evangelism was taking place and missionaries were being sent out! Sent out to reach the lost and lonely and hurting and failing family of God…
•This church…a place where people sense family and love and strength because the Holy Spirit is the One in charge. Where all things take a back seat to sound doctrine, fervent prayer, simple worship, simple love, simple truth and sacrificial service because that is to simply model Jesus. A place that is hospitable…in other words, a hospital for the weak and the sick and the hurting…where if they want to be made well, they can be…The faithful church. The church that is happily married to Jesus as His bride with unrelenting and unashamed commitment!
Revelation Chapter 3 Verse 7b
•“These things says He who is holy, He who is true.” Holy and true are inseparable, I just want you to know that. These are essential characteristics of God to consider and understand. God is true, and God is love, but God is also holy…and if He is not holy, He would be neither true or love. Holy is the to be totally set apart from sin, the opposite of evil…and it is synonymous with truth and also with love.
•Do you see it? Because that applies to you and to I as well as we read in 1 Peter 1:16, “It is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”” Is your love without holiness (set apart from sin)? Then it’s not true…some work to do there…
•I love that Jesus identifies Himself this way to this church. It’s a great compliment. An awesome accolade. Why? Because if that’s not who He is, they aren’t going to listen. I wonder if you got a letter and it was written, “This says he that is not holy and is not true” if you would read any further….I certainly wouldn’t! But sometimes we do, don’t we? We listen to a voice over the voice of God, sometimes our own, sometimes our hearts and we do err…Not this church and Jesus knows it, and with them He is well pleased.
•He who has the keys of David, He who opens and not can shut, and shuts and no one can open. This is a direct reference to Isaiah 22 but first, this is a direct reference to what we talked about last week in terms of freedom and life in Jesus! That once you align who you are with who God wants you to be then you are free! And now its not even really about who cares what others say, oddly enough you become that heavenly refuge in this hellishly evil world…why? Because you’re over your flesh, God taught you, and you’re like Him! You’ve found “overcome.” Doors open and shut and God does it all and it’s just grand!
•But back to Isaiah 22… This is a direct, almost word for word reference to Isaiah 22 verse 22 and it’s so cool because that chapter is speaking of an unwise and unrighteous man who was the treasurer of Judah by the name of Shebna. Shebna was stealing the money and spending it on himself and so the Key to the Treasury of God was taken from him and given to one that was righteous, Eliakim.
•But here’s where it gets good. Isaiah there in verse 21 of Chapter 22 begins to describe the responsibility, the position, the power of the key holder…he says, “He is clothed with a robe and He is a Father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to Judah…I will fasten him a peg (or a nail) and He will be a glorious throne to His Father’s house!”
•Now, who is a Father that has a Father? Who was fastened with a nail? Who is clothed in a robe? This so clearly speaks of Jesus. And so, the Key of David…the key to the treasury of God, opened by Jesus and only by Jesus!
•Jesus is the One who opened the doors for William Carey in India, Hudson Taylor in China, for us here in Colorado…and He is also the One who shuts doors that cannot be kicked through with comparison, logic, reason…what do I mean by that? All these excuses people give for not following Jesus…one I’ve heard…well why be Christian? They’re just a bunch of hypocrites…that’s an excuse!! We follow Jesus, we’re not Him! Another one, “Well, I just can’t understand or accept this sentence, this verse in the Bible…” Well, what about the other 31,101 verses! They get tossed out!!!??? Excuses…
•And look, if a man or a woman or a kid continually continually continually says “No” to the Lord…the treasury of God unlocked through Jesus…if anyone uses that treasury for selfish gain…saying “no” to Jesus, and yest to self, making it their heart’s anthem, there will come a time when he or she of they will be unable to say, “Yes” at which point they’re locked in to his or her eternal decision. Jesus is the door, Jesus has the key, He’s the way…He proved it when He rose from the dead…heart stopped…blood poured out…yet He stood, commanded life back into His body and walked out of His own coffin…only One is able to do that! One who is above this life! He’s done all that He can do and the treasury of God is available to anyone through Him!
•And the accolade given to this church that we will look more into next week, is that they had a little strength…they kept His Word….they did not deny His name. The faithful church says “YES” to Jesus…no matter what He is asking, not matter where He is directing, why? They are His, and He is theirs.

Apocalipsis Capítulo 3 Versículo 7ª

• Filadelfia es la iglesia ubicada en una ciudad llamada por amor. Específicamente,
amor fraternal como Fileo es la palabra griega para eso, amor familiar o amor fraternal o amor fraternal. Y creo que es perfecto porque esto también se conoce como la iglesia fiel o la iglesia misional.
• En la última noche de libertad que tuvo Jesús en esta tierra antes de ser falsamente acusado, brutalizado y crucificado, se levantó de la mesa, dejó a un lado su ropa de abrigo, lo que diríamos hoy, su sudadera, y en un acto de superior humildad (porque la humildad es superior), lavó los pies de sus discípulos, incluido Judas. Pero entonces algo cambió, sucedió algo y Judas se fue ...
• Después de eso Jesús, sin duda enfadado en Su Espíritu, entristecido por el fracaso de alguien a quien ama, Jesús levantó Su voz una vez más y encontramos
esto en Juan 13: 34-35, “Un mandamiento nuevo les doy: que se amen los unos a los otros; como yo os he amado, que también os améis unos a otros. En esto todos sabrán que son Mis discípulos, si se aman los unos a los otros ”. Entendieron lo que estaba diciendo ... que el pueblo de Dios será marcado por su misericordia, por su gracia, por su perdón, por su amor ... incluso cuando alguien a quien ama fracasa en la traición.
• John captó la esencia. Él escribió en 1 Juan 4:20: "Si alguien dice:" Amo a Dios "y odia a su hermano, es un mentiroso ..." Filadelfia es el
iglesia fiel, la iglesia de los amados fraternos ... perfectamente nombrada, ¿por qué?
Porque andar en amor y andar en fe son inseparables. Ellos
ellos mismos son hermanos.
• La ciudad recibió su nombre por este amor fraternal, de hecho. Fue establecida en 189 a. C. por el rey Eumenes II de Pérgamo, momento en el que nombra a la ciudad por el amor de su propio hermano, Atalo Filadelfo II (que lo sucedería como rey de Pérgamo).
• También es conocida como la iglesia misional porque representa el período de la historia de la iglesia en el que la iglesia comenzó de nuevo a propagar a Jesús por todo el mundo, solo que esta vez no con la punta de la espada, sino con el amor y la gracia de Jesús.
• (Hablando de misional) La propia Filadelfia como ciudad fue fundada para expandir la cultura y el idioma griegos a las regiones circundantes y
en sólo 200 años, una ciudad vecina llamada Lydia había
adoptó tanto la cultura como la lengua griega, abandonando la propia. • Además, interesante y relevante, Filadelfia estaba situada en una
Área volcánica subterránea que enriqueció el suelo y calentó naturalmente las aguas. Era una ciudad conocida por sus viñedos, vinos y aguas termales de fama mundial. La gente viajaba a Filadelfia para disfrutar de la vida, escaparse ... descansar.

• Te diré esto, vence tu propia carne, los caminos de este mundo las demandas de nuestra naturaleza caída, toma tu cruz y sigue al Señor, lava los pies de tus enemigos y traidores, haz de tu marca y carácter uno de amor, gracia y misericordia y Jesús vivirá a través de ti ... serás un lugar de refugio y descanso para tu hermano y el bono, el bono de los fieles, el amoroso, el misionero saliente ... es que tú mismo soportarás la superioridad de la cercanía con el Señor y la libertad del gozo divino subterráneo ... gozo indescriptible, inamovible, inagotable, indescriptible, por lo que incluso permanece como un secreto entre usted y el Señor ... este es el amor y la comprensión que Juan captó la esencia de ese día ...

• Aquel en quien Dios le estaba pidiendo que se convirtiera, en quien Dios quería que fuera, en ese momento, se convirtió en quien Juan quería que fuera. Como nosotros
Hablamos la semana pasada. Quien Dios quiere que sea, hombre, es el primer paso ... quiero hacer de eso en mi corazón de corazones quien quiero ser ... y luego simplemente funcionará mientras camino con el Señor y sigo Él. Estoy convencido de que cualquier otra cosa que no sea fidelidad bíblica ... es otra cosa, sensual y falsa.

• Esta iglesia todavía está en escena hoy, pero no tanto como un edificio o una denominación o un movimiento o un nombre. Esta es la iglesia compuesta
de personas de todos los lados, rincones y ángulos del cristianismo que desean amar más a Dios, adorar a Dios no solo en los servicios de la iglesia sino en los momentos fáciles y difíciles ... esta es la iglesia pura ... la gente que hace los mandamientos de Dios de amar a Él y amar a los demás al ritmo de los latidos de su corazón ... nadie a quien impresionar, ninguna agenda que empujar ... feroces contra su propia carne y pecado y apasionados en oración por la gracia sobre la carne y el pecado de otros ... la cruz de Cristo es su significado de vida ... ellos aman como Él ama ... la iglesia fiel ...
• Históricamente, representa un período de tiempo que comienza alrededor de 1800 con quien se llama el creador del movimiento misional moderno de la iglesia, un hombre llamado William Carey. Un feligrés bautista y zapatero en Inglaterra cuyo corazón fue conmovido por el Señor mientras leía Isaías 54: 2-3 frente a su iglesia, “Ensancha el lugar de tu tienda, y que extiendan las cortinas de tus viviendas; No escatima; Alarga tus cuerdas y fortalece tus estacas. ¡Porque te expandirás a la derecha e izquierda, y tu descendencia heredará las naciones y dará vida a las ciudades desoladas!¡La iglesia estaba reviviendo!


• ¡Hizo las maletas, cerró su tienda y viajó a la India para compartir el amor y la esperanza de la salvación a través de Jesús! ¡Algo que no había sucedido desde Pablo en su época! ¿Que estaba pasando? Avivamiento, el corazón cubierto de costra de la iglesia estaba latiendo de nuevo y como una novia enamorada de su novio, la iglesia despertó con el deseo de estar cerca del Señor, de volver a la sencillez de la relación y de hacer lo que Dios les había pedido que hicieran ... ¡asumir la responsabilidad de la Gran Comisión!

• Escuché esta semana, "Si va a ser, depende de mí". Me gusta eso. Dios nos ha dado un gran llamado en este mundo, a todos y cada uno de nosotros, pero es como dijo una vez Vidal Sassoon: "¡El único lugar donde el éxito viene antes que el trabajo es en el diccionario!" ¿Dónde está la iglesia que asume la responsabilidad de los mandamientos de Dios? ¡¡Esa es la iglesia fiel !! "Esforzarse no por tener éxito, sino por ser valioso". -- Albert Einstein

• ¡Carey dio el ejemplo! ¡Él les mostró a ellos y a nosotros que no es necesario ser hábil, talentoso o especial para ser utilizado en el Reino! Dios simplemente está buscando hombres simples y mujeres simples lo suficientemente fieles para cumplir con lo que Él ha pedido. La mayor habilidad es la disponibilidad.

• ¡La iglesia en Filadelfia habla de esta era de la historia de la iglesia que comenzó con una fidelidad poderosa y desinteresada! (¿Hay alguna otra?)
Fue a través de hombres y mujeres como Carey en India y Hudson Taylor en China, D.L. Moody en América y C.H. ¡Spurgeon en Londres que se estaba llevando a cabo evangelismo y que se estaban enviando misioneros!
Enviado para alcanzar a la familia de Dios perdida, solitaria, herida y fracasada ...

• Esta iglesia ... un lugar donde la gente se siente en familia, amor y fortaleza porque el Espíritu Santo es el que está a cargo. Donde se llevan todas las cosas
un asiento trasero a la sana doctrina, la oración ferviente, la adoración simple, el amor simple, la verdad simple y el servicio sacrificial porque eso es simplemente modelar a Jesús. Un lugar hospitalario ... es decir, un hospital para los débiles, los enfermos y los heridos ... donde si quieren sanar, pueden ser sanados ... La iglesia fiel. ¡La iglesia que está felizmente casada con Jesús como Su esposa con un compromiso implacable y sin vergüenza!


Apocalipsis Capítulo 3 Versículo 7b

• “Estas cosas dice el Santo, el Verdadero”. Lo santo y lo verdadero son inseparables, solo quiero que lo sepas. Estas son esenciales características de Dios para considerar y comprender. Dios es verdadero y Dios es amor, pero Dios también es santo ... y si no es santo, no sería verdadero ni amor. Santo es estar totalmente apartado del pecado, lo opuesto al mal ... y es sinónimo de verdad y también de amor.

• ¿Lo ves? Porque eso se aplica tanto a ti como a mí, así como leemos en 1 Pedro 1:16, “Escrito está: Sed santos, porque yo soy santo”. ¿Es tu amor sin santidad (apartado del pecado)? Entonces no es verdadero ... algo de trabajo que hacer allí ...

• Me encanta que Jesús se identifique de esta manera con esta iglesia. Es un gran cumplido. Un elogio impresionante. ¿Por qué? Porque si no es Él, no van a escuchar. Me pregunto si recibieras una carta y esta lee asi, "Esto dice el que no es santo y no es verdad" si seguiría leyendo ... ¡Yo ciertamente no lo haría! Pero a veces lo hacemos, ¿no? Escuchamos una voz por encima de la voz de Dios, a veces la nuestra, a veces nuestro corazón y nos equivocamos ... No esta iglesia y Jesús lo sabe, y con ellos se complace mucho.

• El que tiene las llaves de David, el que abre y nadie puede cerrar, y cierra y nadie puede abrir. Esta es una referencia directa a Isaías 22 pero Primero, ¡esta es una referencia directa a lo que hablamos la semana pasada en términos de libertad y vida en Jesús! ¡Que una vez que te alineas con quien eres con lo que Dios quiere que seas, entonces eres libre! Y ahora ni siquiera se trata de a quién le importa lo que digan los demás, por extraño que parezca, te conviertes en ese refugio celestial en este mundo infernalmente malvado ... ¿por qué? ¡Porque estás sobre tu carne, Dios te enseñó y eres como Él! Has encontrado "superar". Las puertas se abren y se cierran y Dios lo hace todo y ¡es grandioso!

• Pero volvamos a Isaías 22 ... Esta es una referencia directa, casi palabra por palabra, a Isaías 22 versículo 22 y es genial porque ese capítulo esta
hablando de un hombre insensato e injusto que era el tesorero de Judá llamado Sebna. Sebna estaba robando el dinero y gastándolo en sí mismo, por lo que le quitaron la llave del tesoro de Dios y se la dio a uno que era justo, Eliaquim.


• Pero aquí es donde se pone bueno. Isaías en el versículo 21 del Capítulo 22 comienza a describir la responsabilidad, la posición, el poder de la llave de Aquel que la Sostiene ... él dice, “Él está vestido con un manto y Él es un Padre para los habitantes de Jerusalén y de Judá ... Yo le pondré una estaca (o un clavo) y Él será un trono glorioso ¡La casa de mi padre!

• Ahora, ¿quién es un padre que tiene un padre? ¿Quién fue atado con un clavo? ¿Quién está vestido con un manto? Esto habla tan claramente de Jesús. Y así, la Llave de David ... la llave del tesoro de Dios, abierta por Jesús
¡y solo por Jesús!

• Jesús es el que abrió las puertas para William Carey en la India, Hudson Taylor en China, para nosotros aquí en Colorado ... y también es el que cierra puertas que no se pueden romper con, la comparación, la lógica, la razón ... ¿qué quiero decir con eso? Todas estas excusas que la gente da para no seguir a Jesús ... una que he escuchado ... bueno, ¿por qué ser cristiano?
Son solo un montón de hipócritas ... ¡¡eso es una excusa !! Seguimos a Jesús, ¡no somos Él! Otro, "Bueno, simplemente no puedo entender o aceptar esta oración, este versículo en la Biblia ..." Bueno, ¿qué hay de los otros 31,101 versículos? ¿¡¿¡¿¡¿¡¿¡¿¡¿¡¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿?? Excusas ...

• Y mire, si un hombre o una mujer o un niño continuamente, y continuamente y continuamente dice "No" al Señor ... el tesoro de Dios se abre a través de Jesús ... si alguien usa ese tesoro para una ganancia egoísta ... diciendo "no" a Jesús, y se alegra a sí mismo, convirtiéndolo en el himno de su corazón, llegará un momento en que él o ella no podrán decir , “Sí”, momento en el que están atrapados en su decisión eterna. Jesús es la puerta, Jesús tiene la llave, Él es el camino ... Él lo probó cuando resucitó de entre los muertos ... el corazón se detuvo ... la sangre se derramó ... sin embargo, Él se mantuvo firme, ordenó que la vida regresara a Su cuerpo y salió de Su propio ataúd ... ¡Solo Uno (JESÚS) puede hacer eso! ¡Uno que está por encima de esta vida! ¡Él ha hecho todo lo que puede hacer y el tesoro de Dios está disponible para cualquiera a través de Él!

• Y el elogio dado a esta iglesia que veremos más en la próxima semana, es que tenían un poco de fuerza ... guardaron Su Palabra ... lo hicieron no negar su nombre. La iglesia fiel le dice “SÍ” a Jesús ... no importa lo que Él esté pidiendo, no importa a dónde lo esté dirigiendo, ¿por qué?
Son Suyos y Él es de ellos.
