2 Corinthians 6 vs 11-18
2 Corinthians Chapter 6 Verses 11 – 13
•Paul is wanting them to understand that there is nothing hidden, no agenda and that what he has written to them and said to them is because his heat is for them, not against them. It’s easy sometimes to think that someone is against you when they bring some sort of correction. It feels confrontational and maybe even adversarial…but its not always that way.
•Remember what Paul said in the last chapter, “We regard no one according to the flesh.” We need to be careful that the way something feels or the way that something comes across may not be what the Lord would have you to action. But rather we ought to seek the things of the Spirit in the matter and that means as a rule, as a habit, as Christians, we ought to be constantly at least mindful of but hopefully defaulting to…thinking of others having well intentions. (I’m not sure if that is even how to say that correctly).
•At the very least, we are to allow God to lead us into self-control and get through the moment of shock that someone isn’t 100% happy with us. Listen to this…, Proverbs 25:28 (NIV), “Like a city whose walls are broken through, is a person who lacks self-control.” Proverbs 12:16, “A fool’s wrath is known at once, but a prudent man covers shame.” Proverbs 29:11, “A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.” We use the word “fool” so much and we read it so often in the Bible, do you know what it actually means? A person that is easily tricked into giving away themselves…
•How many times of distresses would be avoided if we would just give a little effort towards maturity…if we would just give one another the benefit of the doubt and stop creating/concocting the original intent of others in our own minds? Paul says in verse 12 that its not him that has caused the distress…all he did was open his heart and open his mouth, speaking the truth in love…but the restriction of the relationship, literally the “distress” in the Greek, is with them, not him.
•In a way, the messaging is this…don’t be so emotionally reactive! You’ve jumped off of a cliff of emotions, chosen to frame the situation and relationship in this false truth, and now everything is hard…everything is a problem. Instead of being restrained by your own affections, restrain your affections that you might see the truth and be free!
•We have this wonderfully large back yard in our new home and it has a fancy-like fence all around the perimeter of the back yard. The problem is that Dart, my 12-pound dog, is able to get out of the fence in several spots and if he really wanted to…thinking thin…HA…he maybe could even squeeze through the iron bars of the fence all around. So, the other day, April is outside with him and he makes a break for an escape and gets out of the fence. Now the fence is about five feet tall so April was not going over it…so quick thinking…she jumped to the ground and acted hurt! Brilliant! And Dart, concerned for his favorite human, (and being a fool) came back to make sure she was ok…HA!
•Here’s the point, my wife is a great actress! HA, no! The point is that now we have to take him into his own backyard, which is gloriously spacious, on a leash! Restricted! (I wanted to get him a shock collar! I think some Christians need a shock collar! HA!) Here’s what I’m getting to…if Dart (I know he’s just a dog but follow me here – this is applicable to us too) would just restrain his desire to escape the fence (which is stupid anyway…no dog food on the other side, no warm blankets, no life of sleeping most of the day on a comfy couch, HA), he’d have freedom to be outside all of the time, anytime he wants, by himself…and oh by the way, it would cause our stress to cease AND it would save me money! A mountain of benefits!
•This is exactly the situation Paul is in and the situation we find ourselves in with others so often. James 4:1 says, “Where to wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” So, here’s the thing. If you are entering into a moment or a season or a lifetime of distress with someone, ask yourself Christian…if I didn’t start nothing, would there be nothing!? Man, Romans 12:17-18 says, “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”
•“You also be open,” is a call to self-searching realistic honesty! We want everyone to be that way with us, don’t we!? We should also be willing to be that way with them!
2 Corinthians Chapter 6 Verses 14 – 16
•This exhortation of Paul is very clear. He emphasizes his point with five illustrations! (It’s that important) What does it mean to be yoked? Think of the ancient plow where two animals would be fastened to the front to pull it through the field. A single piece of wood would be secured in front of the animals, at the chest, and that piece of wood would be tied to the plow and working together, they would plow the field. So, the picture is being fastened to, or tied into, some sort of commonality of purpose and direction.
•Here’s the issue. If one animal wants to go one way and the other animal wants to go a different way…they both will go nowhere and the work won’t get done. Christians have a direction, a purpose, a calling on their life. God calls, the Christian responds…I mean this is just basic stuff here… But the non-Christian is not guided by God…and so we have a similar situation…two people, two different directions…nothing but problems.
•In context of to whom Paul is speaking and why he is saying this…he is not necessarily telling the Christians there in Corinth to have nothing to do with non-Christians. That’s ridiculous! Romans 10:14-15 says, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” We are sent to the lost…the issue is when we become interdependent, inseparable, fastened or tied to the world.
•Paul is telling them to check their hearts. What they know of Christ, how they have been taught by Paul and how they have been taught by the Holy Spirit…are the people they are listening to…the people they have opened their hearts to…are they in alignment with the work of Jesus Christ on this earth? If the church turns on itself, it is no longer in the business of winning souls! That is why Paul is going into this…
•Instead of being so negative about it all and using it to control people’s behaviors and relationships…think of it this way. Instead of what we should stay away from, I like to very much dwell on what we should stay near to…because it fixes both sides. Paul says, “What fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness.” Ok, which of these should I yoke to in order to get the most work, the best work, the good work completed? Duh! Righteousness! So…lets apply…yoke with righteousness…next, yoke with light…next, yoke with Christ…next, yoke with believers…next, yoke with the temple of God. If I do those things, then I don’t have to worry about not-yoking with dead weight…I’m already taken…
•So, here’s how to rightfully apply this truth…yoke with Jesus, man. It really is that simple! Here’s the fact of the matter…you become what you love, you become more like that which you worship. It becomes who you are. 1 John 2:17 says, “The world and everything in it is passing away,” yoke with it and you enter into the process of perishing…1 John 2:17 continues, “But whoever does the will of God lives forever.” Yoke with Jesus and you enter into the process of everlasting life. Simple.
•Here’s a great pic…we are to be in the world but careful that we do not become of the world…like a boat on the water. Water in the boat is a very bad thing…
2 Corinthians Chapter 6 Verses 17 - 18
•God proclaims in verse 16, “I will dwell in them, and walk among them.” Then in verse 18 He says, “I will be a Father to you.” In speaks of the Holy Spirit, among speaks of Jesus Christ, and Father speaks of the Father. The threefold personhood of God Almighty!
•Paul quotes Jeremiah 31:9 to show the benefit of separating from the things of the anemic and impoverished flesh…separating from the control of the world…the benefit is to literally be yoked with God Almighty! This is the incredible promise of God for those who are willing to separate themselves from the world’s influences for the sake of godliness…
•I think of it like this…a short conversation with God. “God, I know that You care. You’ve proven Yourself. I know that You are good. I know that Your ways are higher than mine. I’m going to follow You. So…what’s next?” His answer…, “The best.”
2 Corintios Capítulo 6 Versículos 11 - 13
- Pablo quiere que entiendan que no hay nada oculto, ninguna agenda y que lo que les ha escrito y dicho es porque su ira es por ellos, no contra ellos. Es fácil a veces pensar que alguien está en contra de uno cuando trae algún tipo de corrección. Se siente como una confrontación y tal vez incluso como un adversario... pero no siempre es así.
- Recuerden lo que dijo Pablo en el último capítulo, "No consideramos a nadie según la carne". Debemos tener cuidado de que la forma en que algo se siente o la forma en que algo se presenta puede no ser lo que el Señor quiere que hagas. Sino que debemos buscar las cosas del Espíritu en la materia y eso significa que como regla, como hábito, como cristianos, debemos estar constantemente al menos atento, pero con la esperanza de que no... Pensando en que los demás tienen buenas intenciones. (No estoy seguro de si así es cómo se dice correctamente).
- Como mínimo, debemos permitir que Dios nos guíe hacia el autocontrol y superar el momento de conmoción de que alguien no esté 100% feliz con nosotros. Escuchen esto..., Proverbios 25:28, ""Como una ciudad cuyas murallas están rotas, es una persona que carece de autocontrol."Proverbios 12:16, "La ira del necio se conoce de inmediato, pero el hombre prudente cubre la vergüenza". Proverbios 29:11, "El necio ventila todos sus sentimientos, pero el sabio los reprime". Usamos tanto la palabra "necio" y la leemos tan a menudo en la Biblia, ¿sabe lo que realmente significa? Una persona que es fácilmente engañada para que se entregue...
- ¿Cuántas veces de angustia se evitarían si sólo diéramos un pequeño esfuerzo hacia la madurez... si sólo nos diéramos unos a otros el beneficio de la duda y dejáramos de crear/concentrar la intención original de los demás en nuestras propias mentes? Pablo dice en el versículo 12 que no es él quien ha causado la angustia... todo lo que hizo fue abrir su corazón y abrir su boca, hablando la verdad en amor... pero la restricción de la relación, literalmente la "angustia" en el griego, es con ellos, no él.
- En cierto modo, el mensaje es este... ¡no seas tan reactivo emocionalmente! Has saltado de un acantilado de emociones, elegiste enmarcar la situación y la relación en esta falsa verdad, y ahora todo es difícil... todo es un problema. En lugar de estar controlado por tus propios sentimientos, restringe tus afectos para que puedas ver la verdad y ser libre!
- Tenemos un patio trasero maravillosamente grande en nuestra nueva casa y tiene una valla de lujo alrededor del perímetro del patio trasero. El problema es que Dart, mi perro de 12 libras, es capaz de salir de la valla en varios puntos y si realmente quisiera... pensando en algo... HA... tal vez podría incluso apretar a través de las barras de hierro de la valla por todas partes. Así que, el otro día, April está afuera con él y se escapa a la fuga y sale de la valla. Ahora, la valla tiene como un metro y medio de altura, así que April no iba a saltarla por encima... piensa rápido... ¡saltó al suelo y actuó como si estuviera herida! ¡Brillante! Y Dart, preocupado por su humano favorito, (y siendo un tonto) volvió para asegurarse de que ella estaba bien...HA!
- El punto es, mi esposa es una gran actriz! HA, no! El punto es que ahora tenemos que llevarlo a su propio patio trasero, que es gloriosamente espacioso, con una correa! Restringido! (¡Quería conseguirle un collar de ahogo! Creo que algunos cristianos necesitan un collar de ahogo. ¡HA!) Esto es lo que quiero decir... si Dart (sé que es sólo un perro pero síganme aquí - esto también es válido para nosotros) limitara su deseo de escapar de la valla (lo cual es estúpido de todas formas... sin comida para perros en el otro lado, sin mantas calientes, sin la vida de dormir la mayor parte del día en un cómodo sofá, HA), tendría libertad para estar fuera todo el tiempo, cuando quisiera, por sí mismo... y oh por cierto, causaría que nuestro estrés cesara Y me ahorraría dinero! ¡Una montaña de beneficios!
- Esta es exactamente la situación en la que se encuentra Paul y la situación en la que nos encontramos con los demás tan a menudo. Santiago 4:1 dice: "¿De dónde vienen las guerras y las peleas entre vosotros? ¿No provienen de vuestras pasiones, las cuales combaten en vuestros miembros?" Así que, esta es la cuestión. Si estás entrando en un momento o una temporada o toda una vida de angustia con alguien, pregúntate Cristiano... si yo no empezara nada, ¿no habría nada? Hombre, Romanos 12:17-18 dice, "No paguen a nadie mal por mal. Procuren lo bueno delante de todos los hombres. Si es posible, en cuanto dependa de ustedes, tengan paz con todos los hombres".
- "Tú también sé abierto", es una llamada a la honestidad realista de auto-búsqueda. Queremos que todo el mundo sea así con nosotros, ¿no? ¡Deberíamos también estar dispuestos a ser así con ellos!
2 Corintios Capítulo 6 Versículos 14 - 16
- Esta exhortación de Pablo es muy clara. ¡Él enfatiza su punto con cinco ilustraciones! (Es así de importante) ¿Qué significa tener un yugo? Piensen en el antiguo arado donde dos animales se amarraban de frente para empujar a través del campo. Un solo pedazo de madera sería asegurado frente a los animales, en el pecho, y ese pedazo de madera sería atado al arado y trabajando juntos, ararían el campo. Así, el panorama es estar sujeto o atado a algún tipo de propósito y dirección común.
- Esta es la problemática. Si un animal quiere ir en una dirección y el otro animal quiere ir en otra... ninguno de los dos irá a ninguna parte y el trabajo no se realizará. Los cristianos tienen una dirección, un propósito, un llamado a su vida. Dios llama, el cristiano responde... quiero decir que esto es algo básico... Pero el no cristiano no es guiado por Dios... y por eso tenemos una situación similar... dos personas, dos direcciones diferentes... nada más que problemas.
- En el contexto de a quién le está hablando Pablo y por qué está diciendo esto... no necesariamente le está diciendo a los cristianos de Corinto que no tengan nada que ver con los no cristianos. ¡Eso es ridículo! Romanos 10:14-15 dice, "¿Cómo, pues, invocarán a aquel en quien no han creído? ¿Y cómo creerán en aquel de quien no han oído? ¿Y cómo oirán sin un predicador? ¿Y cómo predicarán si no son enviados?" Somos enviados a los perdidos... la cuestión es cuando nos volvemos interdependientes, inseparables, atados o atados al mundo.
- Pablo les está diciendo que revisen sus corazones. Lo que saben de Cristo, cómo les ha enseñado Pablo y cómo les ha enseñado el Espíritu Santo... son las personas a las que están escuchando... las personas a las que han abierto sus corazones... ¿están alineados con el trabajo de Jesucristo en esta tierra? Si la iglesia se vuelve contra sí misma, ¡ya no está en el negocio de ganar almas! Es por eso que Pablo está haciendo esto...
- En lugar de ser tan negativo sobre todo y usarlo para controlar el comportamiento y las relaciones de la gente... piensa en esto de esta manera. En lugar de lo que deberíamos evitar, me gusta mucho pensar en lo que deberíamos tener cerca... porque eso arregla ambos lados. Pablo dice: "¿Qué compañerismo tiene la justicia con la iniquidad?" Bien, ¿a cuál de estos debería unirme para conseguir el mayor trabajo, el mejor trabajo, el buen trabajo completado? ¡Duh! ¡Justicia! Así que... vamos a poner... el yugo con la justicia... a continuación, el yugo con la luz... a continuación, el yugo con Cristo... a continuación, el yugo con los creyentes... a continuación, el yugo con el templo de Dios. Si hago esas cosas, entonces no tengo que preocuparme de un no - yugo con peso muerto... ya estoy ocupado...
- Entonces, así es como se aplica correctamente esta verdad... yugo con Jesús, hombre. ¡Realmente es así de simple! Este es el punto... te conviertes en lo que amas, te vuelves más parecido a lo que adoras. Se convierte en lo que eres.1 Juan 2:17 dice, "El mundo y todo lo que en él hay pasará", te unes a él y entras en el proceso de perecer...1 Juan 2:17 continúa, "Pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios vive para siempre". Con el yugo con Jesús entras en el proceso de la vida eterna. Es simple.
- Aquí hay una gran imagen... debemos estar en el mundo, pero con cuidado de no convertirnos del mundo... como un barco en el agua. El agua en el barco es algo muy malo...
2 Corintios Capítulo 6 Versículos 17 - 18
- Dios proclama en el versículo 16, "Habitaré en ellos y caminaré entre ellos". En el versículo 18 dice: "Yo seré un Padre para ustedes". En habla del Espíritu Santo, entre habla de Jesucristo, y Padre habla del Padre. ¡La Trinidad de Dios Todopoderoso!
- Pablo cita Jeremías 31:9 para mostrar el beneficio de separarse de las cosas de la carne anémica y empobrecida... separarse del control del mundo... el beneficio es estar literalmente unido a Dios Todopoderoso! Esta es la increíble promesa de Dios para aquellos que están dispuestos a separarse de las influencias del mundo por el bien de la santidad...
- Pienso en ello como esto... una corta conversación con Dios. "Dios, sé que te importa. Te has demostrado a ti mismo. Sé que eres bueno. Sé que tus planes son más grandes que los míos. Voy a seguirte. Entonces... ¿qué sigue?" Su respuesta... " Lo mejor".
