1 Peter 5 vs 5-14

1 Peter Chapter 5 Verse 5
•“Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders.” Why wouldn’t we want to do this? I get it that many of you have grown up with poor examples of those that were supposed to be your elders, but elders in the family of God are as was described in the verses 1 through 4 and as we discussed last week.
•An elder in the family of God is mature. One whose desire is to take care of another and each other. The caring, the compassionate, the considerate. Those that bear the fruit of the Spirit. Those that serve and serve with eagerness and just a good example of Godly character. If there is anyone I would want to honorably support in this life, it is the elder in the family of God.
•And Peter says the key to appropriate conduct in the eyes of the Lord is to be this phrase, “clothed with humility.” What’s that mean? I love how one Bible commentator put it, “Humility is demonstrated by submission. It is the ability to cheerfully put away our own agenda for God’s, even if God’s agenda is expressed through another person.”
•Humility is to adhere to and accept God’s opinion on the matter, on the person, on the situation, on the moment, even on yourself, over your own. Knowing that even through the emotion and reality of it all, God is true and everything else is jaded… Do you know what that means? That means that if you don’t walk in the grace of God and the acceptance of God that you have through the blood of Jesus, hard on yourself, hard on others, down and depressed about yourself and discouraging to others, it’s not confidence and self esteem you lack, its humility…
•Peter says to be clothed in the stuff. This word is particular and it literally means to “put it on.” It’s the same thing Jesus did in John 13 when He, well let’s read together, John Chapter 13 verses 3-4, “Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”
•Humility won’t come naturally. Naturally, Jesus was and is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, but understanding His station, His mission, who He was and what the will of the Father was, He put on humility when He laid aside His own garments and put that towel on… The same is for you and for me. Realize, wake up, understand, process this…humility must be chosen and if you can’t do it for yourself, do it for others…
•You will never fulfill the great commandment of God without putting on humility. How on earth will you ever love God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength when all you do is beat yourself up over your imperfections and still today try to earn the favor of God? God is not your Boss. He is your Father. Savior, Warrior, Hero and Friend. And your approval is not found in your performance but rather in propitiation. Lay aside your filthy rags that you constantly try to mend and bleach…and receive the grace and love, approval and acceptance of God…
•And the second part of the greatest of commandments is to love each other which you will never ever ever ever do until you put on humility. Because you will be so limited… affection and confidence and gentleness and patience and kindness dammed up like a constrained body of water…no one will ever be good enough for you or get your true self which is fearfully and wonderfully made because you are restricted by unbelief and refuse to see it God’s way. Peter calls that a lack of humility, God calls that pride.
•You have got to let go…and be seen…and be ok with that…because God is ok with all that you are. The goods and the bads and all the mess…He has covered you! So, won’t come naturally, personal decision for us all…to clothe oneself in humility. For the sake of worshipping God and for the sake of washing the feet of others…
•Now, this isn’t just younger people in the faith submit yourselves to those that are mature in the faith…this is also just simply age. The younger person should give honor, always, to the one who is further in years. This is proper and good in the eyes of the Lord and this one specifically, our modern culture has significant issue with, on both sides. Why?
•We have an issue with how we’ve raised the next generation. And it’s not their fault. It’s the older generation’s fault because it was the environment created on their watch that has given us our current culture. Too many have grown up subject to what has been described as a failed parenting strategy. They’ve been told that they’re special and that they can have anything they want just because they want it. They got medals for coming in last, participation medals. And the science on this is already good. We know that it devalues the feeling of accomplishment of those who come in first place and it actually causes those that come in last place embarrassed because they know they don’t deserve it. So, it actually makes them feel worse and doesn’t help.
•Many get into honors classes not because they earned it but because their parents complained. Then they graduate and go into the real world and they find out they aren’t special; they get nothing just because they want it and they get nothing for coming in last. Coming in last doesn’t help you get promoted or hired. And so, in an instant their entire self-image turns on its head and what you find is that there is an entire generation out there with the lowest self esteem of any previous generation. A generation very good at putting filters on their photos in order to curate how they want themselves to be seen. And we think they are full of confidence but at the end of the day its just not true. They don’t know where they are coming from, they don’t know why they’re there, they don’t think they’re worth anything and they think everyone lies… Especially the ones who are older. And they’re jealous. Jealous of the “good old days,” that they never had and they don’t know why.
•And so, we have a younger generation in very very bad shape and an older generation with very high expectations…
•So, clothe yourself in humility. All of you be submissive to one another. Honor and support those that are more senior in years and more aligned, even in the moment, with the mind and will of God… And be patient and gentle with those that are younger than you and take some responsibility for the characteristics your critique…because, Peter says here, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. That word resist is serious, real deal…it literally means to be in opposition as in a battlefield.
•There is so much peace and joy to be found in humility and that alone should be enough to motivate us to put it on, but if not, let this be enough, God cannot bless and refuses to bless pride…even when it looks like severe depression… He cannot bless what put His Son on the cross. More than that, He would never… Just for a moment, put yourself in His shoes… could you? But grace flows in the moment to the humble.
•That word “gives” is in a tense that implies a prolonged action and it can be thought of like this… God grants the advantage. He furnishes. He commissions. He grants. He appoints. How are elders in the church born? Through humility…
1 Peter Chapter 5 Verse 6
•Very much an important and recurring theme throughout the Word of God. James 4:10, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Matthew 23:12, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” So much is said of our attitudes towards ourselves in the private presence of God, which is reflected in our attitudes towards others…
1 Peter Chapter 5 Verse 7
•There are two different and distinct words used here for “care.” The first literally means anxiety, burden or worry. And this is the kind that kills fruit. What do I mean by that? This Greek word is only used a handful of times in the New Testament, and the majority of its uses are in the parable of the soils. As Jesus shared in Matthew 13:22, “Now he who received seed among thorns is he who hears the word of God, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.”
•These are the anxieties that we have got to take and literally throw them at the Lord. Constantly. Because whatever is choking out fruitfulness in you is choking out your life. Period. There are anxieties that are good. I worry all the time about being a good husband, a good father, a good pastor…and that worry is rooted in love and a desire for the goodness of those that I love. So, I study, pray, seek the Lord…but there are other anxieties that naturally cause me not to seek the Lord.
•Anger, bitterness, malice, selfishness…God says, I see you, I see what they are doing to you, I can help, I care about even that…in the private presence of just you and Me, give that to me too… (That is the work of letting humility enter!)
1 Peter Chapter 5 Verses 8 – 9
•Peter would know. This word for devour is literally to “overwhelm and devastate.” Peter would know. And so, he says to us, stay sharp, stay awake and aware, the opposite of “woke,” and when the enemy attacks…resist! Fight back. Resist him! How? Steady your faith! The enemy has no defenses against faithfulness.
1 Peter Chapter 5 Verses 10 – 11
•Through the grace of God, available to any of us in the blink of an eye, that enters through faith which really only means humility, (and this is the will of God for me and for us), we become complete. We are established. We grow in strength and peace settles within us about it all. Who we are. How we are. Why we are. What we are. It’s not all roses an butterflies. Some of me is not good at all…but I’m settled and at peace about it because I know, I’m on my way. I’m forgiven. I’m accepted. I’m covered by the grace of God and the love of God through Jesus Christ!
1 Peter Chapter 5 Verses 12 – 14
•The name Silvanus is the same as the name Silas and so it was probably Silas writing this letter from the mouth of Peter… “She who is in Babylon,” there is great discussion as to who this is or if this is a “who” at all. Some say this refers to the church in Rome, as Rome is referred to as Babylon metaphorically in other places of the scriptures, and interestingly some say this is Mary who perhaps was alive and being cared for by the disciples…at any rate, we don’t know…
•We also see here the connection of Peter and Mark…same connection as Paul had with Timothy, Peter had with Mark and comparing the writing styles of Peter’s letters with the Gospel of Mark it becomes evident that Mark’s gospel is most likely a dictation of Peter.
•And finally, all that we have covered in this letter, all that Peter has given, was for the peace of God that we all have a right to through the blood of Jesus Christ. And so, he concludes with, “Peace to you.” So, receive multiplied grace! Chapter 1. Make a decision to lay aside sin because of what it is and learn that submission to God is actually freedom of life! Chapter 2. Welcome suffering for the sake of God’s will in your life and love. Chapters 3 and 4. And clothe yourself in humility in order to bear fruit. Chapter 5. Reverse all of the peace stealing strategies of the enemy and be a rare human being. One who is in Jesus and in that, at peace with yourself and your God.


· "Del mismo modo, ustedes, jóvenes, sométanse a sus mayores". ¿Por qué no querríamos hacer esto? Entiendo que muchos de ustedes han crecido con malos ejemplos de aquellos que se suponía que eran sus mayores, pero los ancianos de la familia de Dios son como se describió en los versículos 1 al 4 y como discutimos la semana pasada.
· Un anciano en la familia de Dios es maduro. Uno cuyo deseo es cuidar de otro y de los demás. El que cuida, el compasivo, el considerado. Los que llevan el fruto del Espíritu. Aquellos que sirven y sirven con entusiasmo y solo un buen ejemplo de carácter piadoso. Si hay alguien a quien me gustaría apoyar honorablemente en esta vida, es al anciano de la familia de Dios.
· Y Pedro dice que la clave para una conducta apropiada a los ojos del Señor es ser esta frase, "revestido de humildad". ¿Qué significa eso? Me encanta cómo lo expresó un comentarista de la Biblia: "La humildad se demuestra por la sumisión. Es la capacidad de guardar alegremente nuestra propia agenda para la de Dios, incluso si la agenda de Dios se expresa a través de otra persona".
lo La humildad es adherirse y aceptar la opinión de Dios sobre el asunto, sobre la persona, sobre la situación, sobre el momento, incluso sobre ti mismo, sobre ti mismo. ·. Sabiendo que incluso a través de la emoción y la realidad de todo, Dios es verdadero y todo lo demás es aburrido… ¿Sabes lo que eso significa? Eso significa que si no caminas en la gracia de Dios y la aceptación de Dios que tienes a través de la sangre de Jesús, duro contigo mismo, duro con los demás, deprimido y deprimido contigo mismo y desalentador para los demás, no es confianza y autoestima lo que te falta, es Su humildad lo que falta ...
· Pedro dice que estés vestido con las cosas. Esta palabra es particular y literalmente significa "ponérsela". Es lo mismo que Jesús hizo en Juan 13 cuando Él, bueno, leamos juntos, Juan Capítulo 13 versículos 3-4, "Jesús, sabiendo que el Padre había dado todas las cosas en Sus manos, y que había venido de Dios e iba a Dios, se levantó de la cena y dejó a un lado Sus vestiduras, tomó una toalla y se ceñó. Después de eso, Vertió agua en un recipiente y comenzó a lavar los pies de los discípulos, y a limpiarlos con la toalla con la que estaba ceñido".
· La humildad no vendrá naturalmente. Naturalmente, Jesús era y es el Rey de Reyes y el Señor de Señores, pero entendiendo Su posición, Su misión, quién era Él y cuál era la voluntad del Padre, Se puso humildad cuando dejó a un lado Sus propias vestiduras y puso esa toalla ... Lo mismo es para ti y para mí. Darse cuenta, despertar, entender, procesar esto... hay que elegir la humildad y si no puedes hacerlo por ti mismo, hazlo por los demás...
· Nunca cumplirás el gran mandamiento de Dios sin vestirte de humildad. ¿Cómo amarás a Dios con todo tu corazón, alma, mente y fuerza cuando todo lo que haces es golpearte a ti mismo por tus imperfecciones y aún hoy tratar de ganarte el favor de Dios? Dios no es tu Jefe. Él es tu Padre. Tu Salvador, tu Guerrero, tu Héroe y Amigo. Y su aprobación no se encuentra en su actuación, sino más bien en la propiciación. Deja a un lado tus trapos sucios que constantemente tratas de reparar y blanquear ... y recibir la gracia y el amor, la aprobación y la aceptación de Dios...
· Y la segunda parte del más grande de los mandamientos es amarse unos a otros, lo cual nunca lo harás hasta que se pongan humildad. Porque estarás tan limitado... afecto y confianza y gentileza y paciencia y amabilidad represados como un cuerpo de agua restringido ... nadie será lo suficientemente bueno para ti ni obtendrá tu verdadero yo, que está hecho con temor y maravilla porque estás restringido por la incredulidad y te niegas a verlo a la manera de Dios. Pedro llama a eso una falta de humildad, Dios llama a eso orgullo.
· Tienes que dejarlo ir... y ser visto... y estar bien con eso... porque Dios está bien con todo lo que eres. Las cosas buenas y todo lo malo y todo el desorden... ¡Él te ha cubierto! Entonces, no vendrá naturalmente, decisión personal para todos nosotros ... vestirse de humildad. Por el bien de adorar a Dios y por el bien de lavar los pies de los demás...
· Ahora, esto no es solo que las personas más jóvenes en la fe que se sometan a aquellos que son maduros en la fe ... esto también es simplemente edad. La persona más joven debe honrar, siempre, al que está más lejos en años. Esto es apropiado y bueno a los ojos del Señor y esto específicamente, nuestra cultura moderna tiene un problema significativo con ello, en ambos lados. ¿Por qué?
· Tenemos un problema con la forma en que hemos criado a la próxima generación. Y no es su culpa. Es culpa de la generación anterior porque fue el entorno creado en su reloj lo que nos ha dado nuestra cultura actual. Demasiados han crecido sujetos a lo que se ha descrito como una estrategia de crianza fallida. Se les ha dicho que son especiales y que pueden tener lo que quieran solo porque lo quieren. Obtuvieron medallas por quedar en último lugar, medallas de participación. Y la ciencia sobre esto ya es buena. Sabemos que devalúa el sentimiento de logro de aquellos que vienen en primer lugar y en realidad hace que los que vienen en último lugar se avergüencen porque saben que no lo merecen. Por lo tanto, en realidad los hace sentir peor y no ayuda.
· Muchos entran en clases de honores no porque se lo ganaron, sino porque sus padres se quejaron. Luego se gradúan y van al mundo real y descubren que no son especiales; no obtienen nada solo porque lo quieren y no obtienen nada por entrar en último lugar. Llegar en último lugar no te ayuda a ser ascendido o contratado. Y así, en un instante, toda su autoimagen se vuelve de cabeza y lo que encuentras es que hay toda una generación con la autoestima más baja de cualquier generación anterior. Una generación muy buena para poner filtros en sus fotos con el fin de curar cómo quieren ser vistos. Y creemos que están llenos de confianza, pero al final del día simplemente no es cierto. No saben de dónde vienen, no saben por qué están allí, no creen que valgan nada y piensan que todos mienten... Especialmente los que son mayores. Y están celosos. Celosos de los "buenos viejos tiempos", que nunca tuvieron y no saben por qué.
· Y así, tenemos una generación más joven en muy muy mal estado y una generación mayor con expectativas muy altas...
· Por lo tanto, vístete de humildad. Todos ustedes sean sumisos unos a otros. Honrar y apoyar a aquellos que son más mayores en años y más alineados, incluso en el momento, con la mente y la voluntad de Dios ... Y sé paciente y gentil con aquellos que son más jóvenes que tú y asume cierta responsabilidad por las características de tu crítica ... porque, dice Pedro aquí, Dios resiste a los orgullosos, pero da gracia a los humildes. Esa palabra resistir es seria, real... literalmente significa estar en oposición como en un campo de batalla.
· Hay tanta paz y alegría en la humildad y eso solo debería ser suficiente para motivarnos a ponérnosla, pero si no, que esto sea suficiente, Dios no puede bendecir y se niega a bendecir el orgullo ... incluso cuando parece una depresión severa ... Él no puede bendecir lo que puso a Su Hijo en la cruz. Más que eso, Él nunca lo haría... Solo por un momento, ponte en Sus zapatos... ¿Podrías? Pero la gracia fluye en el momento hacia los humildes.
· Esa palabra "da" está en un tiempo que implica una acción prolongada y se puede pensar así... Dios concede la ventaja. Él amuebla. Él Se encarga. EL Concede. Él nombra. ¿Cómo nacen los ancianos de la iglesia? A través de la humildad...
1 Pedro Capítulo 5 Versículo 6
· Es un tema muy importante y recurrente en toda la Palabra de Dios. Santiago 4:10, "Humillaos a los ojos del Señor, y Él os levantará". Mateo 23:12, "El que se exalta a sí mismo será humillado, y el que se humilla a sí mismo será exaltado". Mucho se habla de nuestras actitudes hacia nosotros mismos en la presencia privada de Dios, que se refleja en nuestras actitudes hacia los demás...

1 Pedro Capítulo 5 Versículo 7
· Hay dos palabras diferentes y distintas utilizadas aquí para "cuidado". La primera significa literalmente ansiedad, carga o preocupación. Y este es el tipo que mata la fruta. ¿Qué quiero decir con eso? Esta palabra griega solo se usa un puñado de veces en el Nuevo Testamento, y la mayoría de sus usos están en la parábola de las tierras. Como Jesús compartió en Mateo 13:22, "Ahora bien, el que recibió simiente entre espinas es el que escucha la palabra de Dios, y las preocupaciones de este mundo y el engaño de las riquezas ahogan la palabra, y se vuelve infructuoso".
· Estas son las ansiedades que tenemos que tomar y literalmente arrojarlas al Señor. Constantemente. Porque lo que sea que esté ahogando la fecundidad en ti está ahogando tu vida. Punto. Hay ansiedades que son buenas. Me preocupo todo el tiempo por ser un buen esposo, un buen padre, un buen pastor... y esa preocupación está enraizada en el amor y en el deseo de la bondad de los que amo. Así que estudio, oro, busco al Señor... pero hay otras ansiedades que naturalmente me hacen no buscar al Señor.
· Ira, amargura, malicia, egoísmo... Dios dice, te veo, veo lo que te están haciendo, puedo ayudar, me importa incluso eso... en la presencia privada de ti y de mí, dame eso a mí también... (¡Ese es el trabajo de dejar entrar la humildad!)
1 Pedro Capítulo 5 Versículos 8– 9
· Pedro lo sabría. Esta palabra para devorar es literalmente "abrumar y devastar". Pedro lo sabría. Y así, nos dice, mantente alerta, mantente despierto y consciente, lo contrario de "despertado", y cuando el enemigo ataca... ¡resistir! Defiende. ¡Resiste a él! ¿Cómo? ¡Firme su fe! El enemigo no tiene defensas contra la fidelidad.
1 Pedro Capítulo 5 Versículos 10–11
· A través de la gracia de Dios, disponible para cualquiera de nosotros en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, que entra a través de la fe que realmente solo significa humildad, (y esta es la voluntad de Dios para mí y para nosotros), nos volvemos completos. Estamos establecidos. Crecemos en fuerza y la paz se asienta dentro de nosotros sobre todo. Quiénes somos. Cómo somos. Por qué lo somos. Lo que somos. No todo son rosas y mariposas. Algo de mí no es bueno en absoluto ... pero yo estoy tranquilo y en paz al respecto porque sé, que estoy en camino. Estoy perdonado. Soy aceptado. ¡Estoy cubierto por la gracia de Dios y el amor de Dios a través de Jesucristo!

1 Pedro Capítulo 5 Versículos 12–14
· El nombre Silvano es el mismo que el nombre Silas y por lo tanto probablemente fue Silas escribiendo esta carta de la boca de Pedro... "La que está en Babilonia", hay una gran discusión sobre quién es este o si este es un "quién" en absoluto. Algunos dicen que esto se refiere a la iglesia en Roma, como Roma se conoce metafóricamente como Babilonia en otros lugares de las Escrituras, y curiosamente algunos dicen que esta es María que tal vez estaba viva y siendo cuidada por los discípulos ... en cualquier caso, no lo sabemos...
· También vemos aquí la conexión de Pedro y Marcos... La misma conexión que Pablo tenía con Timoteo, Pedro tenía con Marcos y comparando los estilos de escritura de las cartas de Pedro con el Evangelio de Marcos, se hace evidente que el evangelio de Marcos es muy probablemente un dictado de Pedro.
· Y finalmente, todo lo que hemos cubierto en esta carta, todo lo que Pedro ha dado, fue por la paz de Dios a la que todos tenemos derecho a través de la sangre de Jesucristo. Y así, concluye con: "Paz para ti". Así que, ¡recibe la gracia multiplicada! Capítulo 1. ¡Toma la decisión de dejar de lado el pecado por lo que es y aprende que la sumisión a Dios es en realidad libertad de vida! Capítulo 2. Da la bienvenida al sufrimiento por el bien de la voluntad de Dios en tu vida y amor. Capítulos 3 y 4. Y vístete de humildad para dar fruto. Capítulo 5. Invierte todas las estrategias de robo de paz del enemigo y sé un ser humano raro. Uno que está en Jesús y en eso, está en paz contigo mismo y con tu Dios.
