2 Peter 3 vs 1-7

2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 1
•How many of you have “pure” minds this morning? No fear, no fret, no lust, no selfishness… And yet Peter almost conversationally tells you, me, us, his reader that his purpose in writing these letters, in other words - God’s purpose in giving us these scriptures, is to stir up our pure minds. First of all, that speaks of God’s grace, His mercy and His incredible character…all to our significant advantage.
•What do I mean? I’m saved, I’m a Christian, I’m a sinner. All three of those statements are true. Until the day the Lord takes me home, I will struggle daily with the flesh, make mistakes and continue to be engaged in this battle, entirely internal battle, of the Spirit waring with the flesh. And all the while, I will do all of that knowing that by the cross of Jesus, my sins are forgiven. And now my relationship and closeness and oneness and worthiness with God is based solely on the purity that I possess simply by my personal association with Jesus Christ.
•Second thing here in this statement is another thought. How often is my impure mind stirred up by the things of this world and even by my own flesh? Almost constantly, right? Therefore, I see a need to stir up the pure side of my mind as well. That portion of me, that second nature that has come alive by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, I need and want that purity stirred up! Through prayer, faithfulness, Bible study, worship, fellowship, service…
•It’s that old adage, “If you have two things fighting against each other, which one will win? The one you feed!” I find that to be true as well in my own life. Discouraged, fearful, lustful, discontent…what have I been stirring into my spirit? Or maybe better said, what have I not been stirring. It’s like flavored coffee creamer. I hate the stuff…ha. Stir a little bit in, and for me, doesn’t even taste like coffee anymore…just tastes like foofy weak sauce! HA! Same in the spirit I have found… And so, Peter stirs up our pure minds (glory to Jesus) by way of reminder… (putting the things of truth back into our minds – RE, mind).
2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 2
•Peter wants me to win. Period, dot, end of line, end of story, end of transmission. He wants you and I to find what he has found and that is the truth and saving freedom power of Jesus Christ through forgiveness and love. To overcome, to rise above, to walk in wisdom and purpose. And his prescription is to have a mind FULL of the Word of God. That’s the reminder to be stirred unto! The Word of God as spoken through the prophets, apostles and Jesus.
•This would have been the moment, if Peter wanted to establish himself as some sort of supreme leader, but Peter never did that, he never does that, and here he is at the end of his life, and he doesn’t do it now. His statement is that he has shared authority with all of the apostles, shared with the and at the level of the prophets, because all of them are of, from and speaking on behalf of the Lord, Jesus Christ. In a way, he is giving his authority away here which is the mark of a humble, servant, exceptional leader.
2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 3
•I like this. Why do folks scoff? Because it serves themselves. That is the single only particular specific reason anyone ever would scoff. What is “scoffing” anyway? Not a word we use often. To scoff is an expression of contempt, mockery or ridicule. Correct, debate, discuss, disagree…all acceptable. But scoffers are scoffing because, well it’s as Peter says here, they are serving themselves.
•And he says that they will come in the last days. When did the last days begin? Hebrews Chapter 1 Verses 1-2 say, “God, who at various times in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.” According to the New Testament writers, not just the writer of Hebrews, the last days began with the first coming of Jesus.
•And I’m not sure why that causes such a problem for some folks. Maybe it’s because of the logic being used even in Peter’s day by those that sought to ridicule the Apostles… Check this out…
2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 4
•Are they correct in what they are saying? Yes… Jesus hadn’t returned yet and even today He has yet to return however the choice then becomes quite personal, are you going to believe He is at some point going to return, live in that knowledge and reality or are you going to (next verse) willfully forget so that you in no way worry about being prepared…which by the way, will lead you to no doubt the spirit of scoffing!?
•But this was their complaint!? Their “a-ha” against the apostles. Set aside that people are being saved, set free from their sin, experiencing the Lord first hand being filled for the first time and led in a real and authentic way by love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Set aside that people are genuinely caring for each other. Homes and marriages are being saved and even more, thriving. People are experiencing purpose and expressing love. And even in the case of Peter and Paul, the sick were being healed and national regions are changing wholesale for the good as churches are being planted…yea…put that all aside, “where is the promise of His coming, huh!?”
•And over the years this has come up quite a few times in conversation where someone will disagree (with a bit of a spirit of contempt and eve mockery) with the statement or belief that time is short and the return of the Lord is at hand. And my thought, really my verbal response, has always been, “ok, so….” What does that mean? Does that mean there’s still time to sin and repent? Take the long route to freedom and the power of purposeful identify for yourself by not dealing with things as immediately as possible? Is it, if you’re a Christian, better to live in the expectation of Jesus’ imminent return or not? Isn’t that a silly question?
•This has been the hope of the church for the past 2,000 years. We are about to enter into the Christmas season…the song “Joy to the World,” (written in 1719 by Mariah Carey, HA, just kidding, written by Isaac Watts), you know that was written not about Jesus’ birth but about His return? The third and fourth verses read, “No more let sins and sorrows grow, not thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow, far as the curse is found.” “He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love…”
•The theme of the return of Christ, next to the theme of salvation, in fact dominates the scriptures. Almost 2,000 times, the subject of the return of Jesus Christ is spoken about or alluded to. One verse out of 30 verses in the Bible speaks of the second coming, the return of Jesus Christ. A full 1/5th of the entire Bible deals with either the end of days or the second coming of Christ. For every one verse that speaks about His first coming, there are eight that speaks about his second. Twenty-one times Jesus personally refers to His own return and fifty times we are told to be ready for it! Are you? You know because it is a thought you often have…that Jesus may, could, PLEASE…return today!
•And this, by the way, this statement, “All things continue as they were from the beginning of creation,” asked you before is this true…well it is…which sucker punches the theory of evolution, but that’s a conversation for another day.
2 Peter Chapter 3 Verses 5 – 7
•Ok, first of all these verses make clear that the active agent in creation was and is the Word of God. He spoke and creation came forth. Call it the Big Bang…all good…but this is how it all began. God spoke and it was created. Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”
•And truly if you can receive by faith the first sentence of the Bible then the rest of it should be no problem… Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” If you can settle on believing that, because whatever you believe for how we got here and where we came from, whatever you believe is going to take faith, if you can settle on God being big enough for Genesis 1:1, then the rest of the Bible should be no sweat.
•But why do things have millions and billions of years of age then? Well, that’s debatable but lets just accept that statement at face value for a moment. What does Peter say here? “By the word of God the heavens were of old.” Genesis 1:26, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.” Was Adam created a baby or a man? Clearly, he was created as full-grown man. How old was Adam on his first day of life? One day old. But…he was a man. God can create with the appearance of age. In fact, that’s the way the Bible lays out creation, just look at Adam. And that’s only one way to Biblically answer that question. There are others.
•Enough to say that it takes faith. Creation through random occurrence or creation through the Creator, both are going to take faith… But what Peter is talking about here is that those who scoff at the message of the return of Christ forget how suddenly they can personally be destroyed! Christ may not return for another 100 years, but all of us are going to return to Him before then!
•And Peter points to the flood to make this point. That God preserved, He tarried, until the day He didn’t, which caught everyone on the earth but 8 souls by storm (pun intended). How about me? Am I ready today, if this is all I have, am I ready to sit down with Jesus?



2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 1
· ¿Cuántos de ustedes tienen mentes "puras" esta mañana? Sin miedo, sin inquietud, sin lujuria, sin egoísmo ... Y, sin embargo, Pedro casi conversacionalmente te dice a ti, a mí, a nosotros, a su lector, que su propósito al escribir estas cartas, en otras palabras, el propósito de Dios al darnos estas escrituras, es despertar nuestras mentes puras. En primer lugar, eso habla de la gracia de Dios, su misericordia y su increíble carácter... todo a nuestra ventaja significativa.
· ¿A qué me refiero? Soy salvo, soy cristiano, soy pecador. Las tres afirmaciones son ciertas. Hasta el día en que el Señor me lleve a casa, lucharé diariamente con la carne, cometeré errores y continuaré participando en esta batalla, batalla completamente interna, del Espíritu que hace guerra con la carne. Y todo el tiempo, haré todo eso sabiendo que por la cruz de Jesús, mis pecados son perdonados. Y ahora mi relación y cercanía y unidad y dignidad con Dios se basa únicamente en la pureza que poseo simplemente por mi asociación personal con Jesucristo.
· La segunda cosa aquí en esta declaración es otro pensamiento. ¿Cuántas veces mi mente impura es agitada por las cosas de este mundo e incluso por mi propia carne? Casi constantemente, ¿verdad? Por lo tanto, veo la necesidad de agitar el lado puro de mi mente también. ¡Esa porción de mí, esa segunda naturaleza que ha cobrado vida por la presencia del Espíritu Santo que mora en mí, necesito y quiero que esa pureza se agite! A través de la oración, la fidelidad, el estudio de la Biblia, la adoración, el compañerismo, el servicio...
· Es ese viejo adagio: "Si tienes dos cosas luchando entre sí, ¿cuál ganará? ¡La que alimentas!" Encuentro que eso también es cierto en mi propia vida. Desanimado, temeroso, lujurioso, descontento... ¿Qué he estado moviendo en mi espíritu? O tal vez mejor dicho, ¿qué no he estado agitando? Es como una crema de café con sabor. Odio esa cosa... ja. Revuelve un poco, y para mí, ya ni siquiera sabe a café ... ¡Solo sabe a agua agitada con crema de calcetín! ¡Ja! Lo mismo en el espíritu que he encontrado... Y así, Pedro despierta nuestras mentes puras (gloria a Jesús) por forma de recordatorio... (poniendo las cosas de la verdad de nuevo en nuestras mentes – RE, mente).
2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 2
· Pedro quiere que gane. Punto, punto, final de línea, fin de historia, fin de transmisión. Él quiere que tú y yo encontremos lo que él ha encontrado y que es la verdad y el poder salvador de la libertad de Jesucristo a través del perdón y el amor. Vencer, elevarse por encima, caminar en sabiduría y propósito. Y su prescripción es tener una mente LLENA de la Palabra de Dios. ¡Ese es el recordatorio al que hay que agitar! La Palabra de Dios hablada a través de los profetas, apóstoles y Jesús.
· Este habría sido el momento, si Pedro quisiera establecerse como una especie de líder supremo, pero Pedro nunca hizo eso, nunca hace eso, y aquí está al final de su vida, y no lo hace ahora. Su declaración es que ha compartido autoridad con todos los apóstoles, compartida con los profetas y en el nivel de ellos, porque todos ellos son de, de y hablando en nombre del Señor, Jesucristo. En cierto modo, está regalando su autoridad aquí, que es la marca de un líder humilde, siervo excepcional.
2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 3
· Me gusta esto. ¿Por qué la gente se burla? Porque se sirven a sí mismos. Esa es la única razón específica particular por la que alguien se burlaría. Bueno, y ¿Qué es "burlarse"? No es una palabra que usemos a menudo. Burlarse es una expresión de desprecio, burla o ridículo. Corregir, debatir, discutir, discrepar... todo aceptable. Pero los burladores se burlan porque, bueno, es como dice Pedro aquí, se están sirviendo a sí mismos.
· Y dice que vendrán en los últimos días. ¿Cuándo comenzaron los últimos días? Hebreos capítulo 1 versículos 1-2 dice: "Dios, que en varias ocasiones de diversas maneras habló en tiempo pasado a los padres por los profetas, en estos últimos días nos ha hablado por su Hijo". Según los escritores del Nuevo Testamento, no sólo el escritor de Hebreos, los últimos días comenzaron con la primera venida de Jesús.
· Y no estoy seguro de por qué eso causa tal problema para algunas personas. Tal vez sea debido a la lógica utilizada incluso en los días de Pedro por aquellos que buscaban ridiculizar a los apóstoles ... Mira esto...
2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 4
· ¿Tienen razón en lo que dicen? Sí... Jesús aún no había regresado e incluso hoy aún no ha regresado, sin embargo, la elección se vuelve bastante personal, ¿vas a creer que en algún momento Él va a regresar, vivir en ese conocimiento y realidad o vas a (siguiente versículo) olvidar voluntariamente para que de ninguna manera te preocupes por estar preparado ... que por cierto, te llevará sin duda al espíritu de burla!?
· ¿¡Pero esta fue su queja!? Su "a-ha" contra los apóstoles. Deja de lado que las personas están siendo salvadas, liberadas de su pecado, experimentando al Señor de primera mano siendo llenado por primera vez y guiado de una manera real y auténtica por el amor, la alegría, la paz, la longanimidad, la bondad, la fidelidad, la mansedumbre y el dominio propio. Deja de lado que las personas se preocupan genuinamente unas por otras. Los hogares y los matrimonios se están salvando y, lo que es más, prosperan. Las personas están experimentando un propósito y expresando amor. E incluso en el caso de Pedro y Pablo, los enfermos estaban siendo sanados y las regiones nacionales están cambiando al por mayor para bien a medida que se plantan iglesias. Sí... pon todo eso a un lado, "¿Dónde está la promesa de Su venida, eh?"
· Y a lo largo de los años, esto ha surgido varias veces en una conversación en la que alguien estará en desacuerdo (con un poco de espíritu de desprecio y burla de eva) con la declaración o creencia de que el tiempo es corto y que el regreso del Señor está cerca. Y mi pensamiento, realmente mi respuesta verbal, siempre ha sido: "ok, entonces..." ¿Qué significa eso? ¿Significa eso que todavía hay tiempo para pecar y arrepentirse? ¿Tomar el largo camino hacia la libertad y el poder de identificarse con propósito por sí mismo al no tratar con las cosas lo más inmediatamente posible? ¿Es, si eres cristiano, mejor vivir en la expectativa del inminente regreso de Jesús o no? ¿No es una pregunta tonta?
· Esta ha sido la esperanza de la iglesia durante los últimos 2.000 años. Estamos a punto de entrar en la temporada navideña... la canción "Joy to the World" (escrita en 1719 por Mariah Carey, HA, es broma, escrita por Isaac Watts), ¿sabes que no fue escrita sobre el nacimiento de Jesús sino sobre su regreso? Los versículos tercero y cuarto dicen: "No más crezcan los pecados y las penas, ni las espinas infesten la tierra; Él viene a hacer fluir sus bendiciones, hasta donde se encuentra la maldición". "Él gobierna el mundo con verdad y gracia, y hace que las naciones prueben las glorias de su justicia y las maravillas de su amor..."
· El tema del regreso de Cristo, junto al tema de la salvación, domina de hecho las Escrituras. Casi 2.000 veces, se habla o se alude al tema del regreso de Jesucristo. Un versículo de cada 30 versículos en la Biblia habla de la segunda venida, el regreso de Jesucristo. Un 1/5 completo de toda la Biblia trata con el fin de los días o la segunda venida de Cristo. Por cada versículo que habla de Su primera venida, hay ocho que hablan de Su segunda. ¡Veintiuna veces Jesús se refiere personalmente a su propio regreso y cincuenta veces se nos dice que estemos listos para ello! ¿Estas? Lo sabes porque es un pensamiento que a menudo tienes... que Jesús pueda, pueda, POR FAVOR... ¡que Vuelva hoy!
· Y esto, por cierto, esta declaración, "Todas las cosas continúan como eran desde el principio de la creación”, preguntada antes es esto cierto, ¿es verdad? ... bueno, lo es... Lo que golpea la teoría de la evolución, pero esa es una conversación para otro día.
2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículos 5 – 7
· Ok, en primer lugar estos versículos dejan claro que el agente activo en la creación fue y es la Palabra de Dios. Él habló y la creación salió. Llámalo el Big Bang... todo bien... Pero así es como comenzó todo. Dios habló y fue creado. Colosenses 1:16 dice: "Porque por Él fueron creadas todas las cosas que están en el cielo y que están en la tierra, visibles e invisibles, ya sean tronos o dominios o principados o potestades. Todas las cosas fueron creadas por medio de Él y para Él."
· Y verdaderamente si usted puede recibir por fe la primera oración de la Biblia, entonces el resto de ella no debería ser un problema... Génesis 1:1, "En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra". Si puedes conformarte con creer eso, porque cualquier cosa que creas sobre cómo llegamos aquí y de dónde venimos, cualquier cosa que creas va a requerir fe, si puedes conformarte con que Dios sea lo suficientemente grande para Génesis 1: 1, entonces el resto de la Biblia no debería sudar.
· Pero, ¿por qué las cosas tienen millones y miles de millones de años de antigüedad entonces? Bueno, eso es discutible, pero aceptemos esa declaración al pie de la letra por un momento. ¿Qué dice Pedro aquí? "Por la palabra de Dios los cielos eran antiguos." En Génesis 1:26, Dios dijo: "Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen". ¿Fue Adán creado un bebé o un hombre? Claramente, fue creado como un hombre adulto. ¿Qué edad tenía Adán en su primer día de vida? Un día de edad. Pero... Era un hombre. Dios puede crear con la apariencia de la edad. De hecho, esa es la forma en que la Biblia presenta la creación, solo mira a Adán. Y esa es solo una manera de responder bíblicamente a esa pregunta. Hay otros.
· Basta con decir que se necesita fe. La creación a través de la ocurrencia aleatoria o la creación a través del Creador, ambos van a tomar fe ... ¡Pero de lo que Pedro está hablando aquí es de que aquellos que se burlan del mensaje del regreso de Cristo olvidan cuán repentinamente pueden ser destruidos personalmente! Puede que Cristo no regrese por otros 100 años, ¡pero todos nosotros vamos a regresar a Él antes de eso!
· Y Pedro señala el diluvio para hacer este punto. Que Dios preservó, se detuvo, hasta el día en que no lo hizo, lo que tomó a todos en la tierra excepto a 8 almas por asalto (juego de palabras). ¿Y yo? ¿Estoy listo hoy, si esto es todo lo que tengo, estoy listo para sentarme con Jesús?
