2 Peter 3 vs 5-9

2 Peter Chapter 3 Verses 5 – 7 •Ok, first of all these verses make clear that the active agent in creation was and is the Word of God. He spoke and creation came forth. Call it the Big Bang…all good…but this is how it all began. God spoke and it was created. Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” •And truly if you can receive by faith the first sentence of the Bible then the rest of it should be no problem… Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” If you can settle on believing that, because whatever you believe for how we got here and where we came from, whatever you believe is going to take faith, if you can settle on God being big enough for Genesis 1:1, then the rest of the Bible should be no sweat. •But why do things have millions and billions of years of age then? Well, that’s debatable but lets just accept that statement at face value for a moment. What does Peter say here? “By the word of God, the heavens were of old.” Genesis 1:26, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.” Was Adam created a baby or a man? Clearly, he was created as full-grown man. How old was Adam on his first day of life? One day old. But…he was a man. God can create with the appearance of age. In fact, that’s the way the Bible lays out creation, just look at Adam. And that’s only one way to Biblically answer that question. There are others. •Enough to say that it takes faith. Creation through random occurrence or creation through the Creator, both are going to take faith… But what Peter is talking about here is that those who scoff at the message of the return of Christ forget how suddenly they can personally be destroyed! Christ may not return for another 100 years, but all of us are going to return to Him before then! •And Peter points to the flood to make this point. That God preserved, He tarried, until the day He didn’t, which caught everyone on the earth but 8 souls by storm (pun intended). Now, lets look at the flood for just a minute because I have been surprised many times over the years at how little this is understood. The physicality of the flood itself. •Genesis Chapter 1 verses 6-8, on the second day of creation we read, “The God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus, God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So, the evening and the morning were the second day.” •This is not the heaven in terms of the dwelling place of God and the heavenly host, first of all that must be understood. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:2, “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago, whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows, such a one was caught up in the third heaven.” And then in 2 Corinthians 12:4, “How he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words…” And so, we know this “third” heaven is the dwelling place of God, the heaven of heavens. •Ok so understand, the first heaven, the heaven spoken of in Genesis Chapter 1, the heaven that separated the waters from the waters, is the immediate blue sky we see today. The second heaven is the planetary heaven, the black. And the third heaven is the heaven of heavens, the spiritual dwelling place of the spiritual God. Alright, back to Genesis. •So, according to Genesis Chapter 1, there was, at the beginning of creation, some sort of water canopy that was above the blue sky. And this would have created a uniform climate condition upon the entire world. The entire world would have been a type of green house and through this we have explanation for all sorts of seemingly unexplainable historical facts. For example, how is it that we have fossilized woolly mammoths in Antarctica with fresh vegetation found in their mouths and bellies? Which we have… •Also, we read of pre-flood Bible characters such as Methuselah who lived 969 years! Enoch who lived 365 years. Lamech who lived 777 years, Adam and Seth who lived over 900 years each! But then we read in preparation for the flood, in Genesis 6:3, “The Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Then, next up…the Ark. You see, this water canopy…well, why do we age? Like physically? At least a part of it is due to mutation from the effects of UV rays, radiation from the sun. But during the time before the flood, none of that to deal with…and so people would have aged much much slower… •And so, put it all together, what happened at the worldwide flood of Noah? The original earth was watered by a mist each morning according to Genesis Chapter 2. No instance of rain recorded in the Bible prior to the flood. Noah, it says of his faith in Hebrews 11:7 that, “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark…” Constant environmental stability for over a thousand years… And then, one day, God removes his hand from the water canopy and it collapses. Raining for a full 40 days, and the rain was so intense and voluminous, the entire earth was covered with the water. This is why we have fossilized fish on Mount Everest! •Now, coming back to 2 Peter, if the earth did not experience rain before the Flood, then Noah's ark-building must have appeared especially foolish to his critics (scoffers), …and that is the point that Peter is making. It’s really all about and comes down to faith and a personal decision to trust the Lord. I would argue there is ample evidence to do so, personally… 2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 8 •This verse puts on display the enormity of otherness of God! Spurgeon wrote, “All things are equally near and present in His view. With God there is no past, present, nor future. He takes for His name the “I am.” Just as we say of God that He is everywhere, so we may say of Him that He is always. He is everywhere in time.” •Some have applied this eschatologically and while it is, in my opinion, a somewhat loose application, I see it and so I’ll share it with you as well. Throughout the Bible there is a pattern of completion revolving around the number 7. Seven days in a week. The Lord worked through creation for six days and on the seventh He rested. He instituted the Sabbath day through His own example, that under the Old Covenant, we were to work six days and rest on the seventh. In that day, no work was to be done. According to Deuteronomy 15, at the end of every seven years the people were even to forgive each other of any debts… •There are so many examples of seven being significant for completion in the Bible that it would overtake our entire time of study to talk about them all such as Jesus making seven statements from the cross, Jesus writing to seven churches in Revelation, seven trumpets, seven bowl judgments, on an on…. And so, some say ok, if a thousand years is as one day to God, then by calculating through generations given to us from Adam in the Bible, we are in year (roughly) 6,030, or, the seventh day…and therefore we are in the millennial timeline of the return of the Lord. I don’t need numerological acrobatics to tell me that! HA! But anyway, interesting if you’re into that… 2 Peter Chapter 3 Verse 9 •This is the revelation and reason for why God hasn’t yet called a stop to all of this mess! The sole purpose is to allow us as much time as possible to get saved! Many of those who are Christians today are happy that Jesus didn’t return last year, five years ago, ten years ago…, for me, 17 years ago. Or I’d be lost! So, this is why God tarries! •And let me just say, this slaps right across the chops the doctrine and soteriology presented by hyper Calvinism. You may not know what that is and that’s ok… But hyper Calvinism, sometimes referred to as just Calvinism, Reformed Theology, Hyper Grace…essentially teaches that you didn’t choose God in any way shape or form. That God alone chose you and that due to His choosing you, there is and was no way for you to not choose Him. It’s known as irresistible grace. That some are chosen by God for heaven and subsequently some are therefore chosen by God for hell. •But read this line again in 2 Peter. “Not willing that any should perish but that ALL should come to repentance.” The truth of the scripture is that you and I have a responsibility, as decreed through the gift of free will, to either believe on Jesus for our salvation and receive the Holy Spirit of promise, or reject faith in Jesus and remain in our sin. God has ALREADY chosen you. For God so loved the world that He gave His Son that whosever, everyone, anyone, you and me and all of us, if we would believe in Him, we would not perish but have everlasting life!

2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículos 5 – 7

· Ok, en primer lugar estos versículos dejan claro que el agente activo en la creación fue y es la Palabra de Dios. Él habló y la creación salió. Llámalo el Big Bang... todo bien... Pero así es como comenzó todo. Dios habló y fue creado. Colosenses 1:16 dice: "Porque por Él fueron creadas todas las cosas que están en el cielo y que están en la tierra, visibles e invisibles, ya sean tronos o dominios o principados o potestades. Todas las cosas fueron creadas por medio de Él y para Él."

· Y verdaderamente si usted puede recibir por fe la primera oración de la Biblia, entonces el resto de ella no debería ser un problema... Génesis 1:1, "En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra". Si puedes conformarte con creer eso, porque cualquier cosa que creas sobre cómo llegamos aquí y de dónde venimos, cualquier cosa que creas va a requerir fe, si puedes conformarte con que Dios sea lo suficientemente grande para Génesis 1: 1, entonces el resto de la Biblia no debería sudar.

· Pero, ¿por qué las cosas tienen millones y miles de millones de años de antigüedad entonces? Bueno, eso es discutible, pero aceptemos esa declaración al pie de la letra por un momento. ¿Qué dice Pedro aquí? "Por la palabra de Dios, los cielos eran antiguos". En Génesis 1:26, Dios dijo: "Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen". ¿Fue Adán creado un bebé o un hombre? Claramente, fue creado como un hombre adulto. ¿Qué edad tenía Adán en su primer día de vida? Un día de edad. Pero... Era un hombre. Dios puede crear con la apariencia de la edad. De hecho, esa es la forma en que la Biblia presenta la creación, solo mira a Adán. Y esa es solo una manera de responder bíblicamente a esa pregunta. Hay otros.

· Basta con decir que se necesita fe. La creación a través de la ocurrencia aleatoria o la creación a través del Creador, ambos van a tomar fe ... ¡Pero de lo que Pedro está hablando aquí es de que aquellos que se burlan del mensaje del regreso de Cristo olvidan cuán repentinamente pueden ser destruidos personalmente! Puede que Cristo no regrese por otros 100 años, ¡pero todos nosotros vamos a regresar a Él antes de eso!

· Y Pedro señala el diluvio para hacer este punto. Que Dios preservó, se detuvo, hasta el día en que no lo hizo, lo que tomó a todos en la tierra excepto a 8 almas por asalto (juego de palabras). Ahora , echemos un vistazo a la inundación por un minuto porque me he sorprendido muchas veces a lo largo de los años de lo poco que se entiende esto. La fisicalidad del diluvio mismo.

· Génesis capítulo 1 versículos 6-8, en el segundo día de la creación leemos: "El Dios dijo: "Que haya un firmamento en medio de las aguas, y que divida las aguas de las aguas". Así, Dios hizo el firmamento, y dividió las aguas que estaban bajo el firmamento de las aguas que estaban sobre el firmamento; Y así fue. Y Dios llamó al firmamento Cielo. Entonces, la tarde y la mañana fueron el segundo día".

· Este no es el cielo en términos de la morada de Dios y la hueste celestial, en primer lugar eso debe ser entendido. Pablo dijo en 2 Corintios 12:2: "Conozco a un hombre en Cristo que hace catorce años, ya sea en el cuerpo que no conozco, o si del cuerpo no conozco, Dios sabe, tal fue arrebatado en el tercer cielo". Y luego en 2 Corintios 12: 4, "Cómo fue arrebatado al Paraíso y oyó palabras inefables ..." Y así, sabemos que este "tercer" cielo es la morada de Dios, el cielo de los cielos.

· Ok, así que entiendan, el primer cielo, el cielo del que se habla en Génesis capítulo 1, el cielo que separaba las aguas de las aguas, es el cielo azul inmediato que vemos hoy. El segundo cielo es el cielo planetario, el negro. Y el tercer cielo es el cielo de los cielos, la morada espiritual del Dios espiritual. Muy bien, volvamos al Génesis.

· Entonces, según Génesis capítulo 1, había, al comienzo de la creación, una especie de dosel de agua que estaba sobre el cielo azul. Y esto habría creado una condición climática uniforme en todo el mundo. El mundo entero habría sido una especie de invernadero y a través de esto tenemos una explicación para todo tipo de hechos históricos aparentemente inexplicables. Por ejemplo, ¿cómo es que tenemos ¿Mamuts lanudos fosilizados en la Antártida con vegetación fresca encontrada en sus bocas y vientres? Que tenemos...

· Además, leemos sobre personajes bíblicos anteriores al diluvio como Matusalén, ¡que vivió 969 años! Enoc que vivió 365 años. Lamec que vivió 777 años, Adán y Set que vivieron más de 900 años cada uno! Pero luego leemos en preparación para el diluvio, en Génesis 6:3, "Jehová dijo: "Mi Espíritu no peleará con el hombre para siempre, porque ciertamente es carne; sin embargo, sus días serán ciento veinte años". Entonces, a continuación ... el Arca. Verás, este dosel de agua ... Bueno, ¿por qué envejecemos? ¿Físicamente? Al menos una parte de ella se debe a la mutación de los efectos de los rayos UV, la radiación del sol. Pero durante el tiempo anterior al diluvio, nada de eso para lidiar ... Y así la gente habría envejecido mucho más lento ...

· Y así, póngalo todo junto, ¿qué sucedió en el diluvio mundial de Noé? La tierra original fue regada por una niebla cada mañana de acuerdo con Génesis capítulo 2. No hay ningún caso de lluvia registrado en la Biblia antes del diluvio. Noé, dice de su fe en Hebreos 11:7 que, "Por la fe Noé, siendo divinamente advertido de cosas que aún no se ven, movido con temor piadoso, preparó un arca ..." Estabilidad ambiental constante durante más de mil años... Y entonces, un día, Dios quita su mano del dosel de agua y se derrumba. Llovía durante 40 días completos, y la lluvia era tan intensa y voluminosa, que toda la tierra estaba cubierta con el agua. ¡Es por eso que hemos fosilizado peces en el Monte Everest!

· Ahora, volviendo a 2 Pedro, si la tierra no experimentó lluvia antes del Diluvio, entonces la construcción del arca de Noé debe haber parecido especialmente tonta a sus críticos (burladores), ... y ese es el punto que Pedro está haciendo. Realmente se trata de la fe y la decisión personal de confiar en el Señor. Yo diría que hay amplia evidencia para hacerlo, personalmente ...

2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 8

· ¡Este versículo pone en exhibición la enormidad de la alteridad de Dios! Spurgeon escribió: "Todas las cosas están igualmente cerca y presentes en Su opinión. Con Dios no hay pasado, presente ni futuro. Él toma por Su nombre el "Yo soy". Así como decimos de Dios que Él está en todas partes, así también podemos decir de Él que Él siempre está. Él está en todas partes en el tiempo".

· Algunos han aplicado esto escatológicamente y aunque es, en mi opinión, una aplicación algo floja, la veo y por eso la compartiré con ustedes también. A lo largo de la Biblia hay un patrón de finalización que gira alrededor del número 7. Siete días en una semana. El Señor obró a través de la creación durante seis días y en el séptimo descansó. Él instituyó el día de reposo a través de Su propio ejemplo, que bajo el Antiguo Pacto, debíamos trabajar seis días y descansar en el séptimo. En ese día, no había que hacer ningún trabajo. Según Deuteronomio 15, al final de cada siete años la gente debía incluso perdonarse mutuamente de cualquier deuda ...

· Hay tantos ejemplos de siete que son significativos para completar en la Biblia que superaría todo nuestro tiempo de estudio hablar de todos ellos, como Jesús haciendo siete declaraciones desde la cruz, Jesús escribiendo a siete iglesias en Apocalipsis, siete trompetas, siete tazones de jucio, así uno tras otro.... Y así, algunos dicen que está bien, si mil años es como un día para Dios, entonces calculando a través de las generaciones que nos dio Adán en la Biblia, estamos en el año (aproximadamente) 6,030, o, el séptimo día ... y por lo tanto estamos en la línea de tiempo milenaria del regreso del Señor. ¡No necesito acrobacias numerológicas para decirme eso! ¡Ja! Pero de todos modos, interesante si te gusta eso ...

2 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículo 9

· ¡Esta es la revelación y la razón por la cual Dios aún no ha puesto fin a todo este lío! ¡El único propósito es permitirnos el mayor tiempo posible para ser salvos! Muchos de los que son cristianos hoy están felices de que Jesús no haya regresado el año pasado, hace cinco años, hace diez años..., para mí, hace 17 años. ¡O estaría perdido! Entonces, ¡es por eso que Dios se demora!

· Y permítanme decir, esto golpea la doctrina y la soteriología presentadas por el hipercalvinismo. Puede que no sepas qué es eso y está bien... Pero el hipercalvinismo, a veces referido simplemente como calvinismo, teología reformada, hipergracia ... esencialmente enseña que no elegiste a Dios de ninguna manera. Que solo Dios te eligió a ti y que debido a que Él te escogió, no hay y no había manera de que no lo eligieras a Él. Se conoce como gracia irresistible. Que algunos son escogidos por Dios para el cielo y posteriormente algunos son elegidos por Dios para el infierno.

· Pero lee esta línea de nuevo en 2 Pedro. "No queriendo que nadie perezca, sino que TODOS vengan al arrepentimiento". La verdad de la escritura es que tú y yo tenemos la responsabilidad, según lo decretado a través del don del libre albedrío, de creer en Jesús para nuestra salvación y recibir el Espíritu Santo de la promesa, o rechazar la fe en Jesús y permanecer en nuestro pecado. Dios YA te ha elegido. Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su Hijo para que quienquiera que sea, todos, cualquiera, tú y yo y todos nosotros, si creyéramos en Él, ¡no pereceríamos, sino que tendríamos vida eterna!
