2 Peter 2 vs 3-10

2 Peter Chapter 2 Verse 3
•Covetousness, exploitation, deception. This is the recipe, the prescription, the consistency of the false prophet, the Gnostic, the Narcissist. They want you or something you can do for them or something you have. And the reason they want it is to exploit it in order to prop up and support their personal truth. Which really comes down to making them feel good. Giving them pleasure. And in order to extract what they want from you they’ll do and say just about anything… And when you fall into their trap, destruction doesn’t slumber.
•Compare and contrast that with what God not only calls you to but desires for you through Jesus Christ. God doesn’t want what we have so that He can spend it on Himself. God’s desire for you and for me is for us to be blessed with whatever we have, be it a lot or a little… God is blessed to see us blessed! His desire is to teach us that joy doesn’t come from what we can get from others but what we can give to others, because He has made each one us fearfully, wonderfully and in His image, and He has showed us the WAY through the cross!
•God in no way wants to exploit you or exploit me for His own purposes but rather He wants to show us that His purpose for our life is how you and I overcome the world! Reach our God-given and God-designed potential…and find freedom and strength and joy of mind, heart, body and soul. And there is zero deception in God. He will tell you the truth of the truth always even when it makes us feel not so good… Because in the end, He is not concerned with my happiness as much as He is concerned with my holiness… Holiness is what will set me free, not momentary, situational, circumstantial highs of happiness.
•It’s difficult, I know, to turn from self and to turn to God because it takes faith…it takes trust…and it takes setting self aside, but the decision is clear…to be a false prophet, serve yourself…and search your whole life for meaning and joy. Or serve the Lord, set self down and embrace the cross of Jesus Christ and be set free entirely.
2 Peter Chapter 2 Verses 4 – 9
•The extraction from these verses is that God is serious about this…and the fate of the angels that sinned (which we covered in depth in a previous study – please reference the study on 1 Peter Chapter 3 Verses 13-22), the fate of the world of the ungodly in the time of Noah, the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, all of these give testimony, warning and type of what’s going to be the fate of those who pervert the gospel of grace and live after themselves…
•It’s so not enough though, is it? Like, these types and these pictures, they are all there and yet every day people hurt people left and right in the church by living unto themselves and not unto the Lord! It’s crazy! I was thinking about this the other day…80s music. 80s music was there when I was in high school, when I was in college, when I began my career, when we started this church…and now I hear an 80s song and I think about how I heard this when I knew so much less and like…well, it’s just odd… many things were knowable then…like how a relationship would end up or man just thinking about the mistakes that I’ve made along the way and what my life would be like if I just hadn’t of made this decision or that decision, it’s such a wild thought…I don’t know if that makes any sense… but for me, the warnings and the dangers and the risks, not enough… So, I’m empathetic and yet still frustrated with those that decide to serve self today…
•And this is where grace, in a way, works a bit against me/us…in the flesh I should say. Because this verse set puts on display that God’s grace and His mercy and His longsuffering and His patience can be completely abused and mistaken for weakness, blindness or even approval but in fact in that mistake, in a way, folks are sealing their fate. To lose perhaps something glorious of God that could have been their future.
•And yet, there’s incredible encouragement here also of how God, even in the midst of all of my nonsense, flesh and ultimately because I am His child, will save and provide for me, not because I am good but because He is good! What? Where? Look at verse 7… Lot, look at this descriptor given for him. It says here, “righteous Lot!” What!? Lot chose where he would, live, work, raise his family not based on God’s will but it says in Genesis 13:10 that “Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord,” …only it wasn’t the garden of the Lord… He just didn’t lift his eyes enough…
•And so, he settles in Sodom, and begins life, brings up his family…and when the angels come to speak to him in Sodom, where is he? Sitting on the gate of the city. In other words, he was an elder by that time of that city, a leader…BUT…notice, Peter tells us that living there and what went on there “tortured his righteous soul from day to day,” and so even in the midst of doing virtually everything wrong… God calls him righteous!? SO much to say about that but enough to simply say this…if Lot was righteous in the eyes of God, I’ve got a shot! HA!
•And just as God knows how to destroy the false prophet, the wicked and the narcissist, He knows how to save out those that their heart is for the Lord! Even if their life is all wrong… Wild, right? But notice, righteous Lot…let this be a warning…80s music…your decisions, what you ultimately do…in being saved out of Sodom, LOT LOST EVERYTHING…and all he took, his daughters, well, they were the ultimate legacy of shame if you know the story… So, notice, additional qualities of the ungodly…
2 Peter Chapter 2 Verse 10
•This section, really all the way to the end of the chapter becomes so descriptive that not much commentary is needed but notice Peter equates walking according to the flesh (living out of connection with God – out of His will – and in opposition to His blessings) with uncleanness and despising authority. Uncleanness, let me ask you, do you feel clean today? Like spiritually, emotionally, mentally clean? If your answer is no then you are living out of connection with God, out of His will, and in opposition to His blessings.
•But I’ve done too much, I mean, you don’t know what I did on the way to church this morning? Ok, 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sin,” that word in the Greek is “homologeo,” and it means “same logic,” if we agree with God about it rather than justifying it, deflecting it or hiding it, covering it up and hoping it goes away, but if we acknowledge that sin, 1 John 1:9 says that, “He is faithful and just to forgive us out sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.” SO, if you don’t feel spiritually, emotionally, mentally clean today… you need to quite running, hiding, deflecting, justifying and acknowledge your sin before God…and then, you’re clean. Back in connection with God, back in His will and back in agreement with God’s blessing on your life. SO many have gotten into a lifestyle of just living unclean and it halts your growth, kills you joy and makes you loveless…
•Peter also links walking according to the flesh with despising authority, self-will and presumption. What does that look like? Rebellion outright? No. This is grumbling, back-biting, gossip and talking behind the back of someone God has put in your life to keep order, whip you into shape and boss you around. HA! But we won’t have authority like that, right? We’re Americans! So, we undermine authority in our own minds by playing one part when they’re around and talking smack when they’re not… That is absolutely walking in the flesh. Sorry, God’s will is that we respect authority whether righteous or unrighteous. Go back to 1 Peter Chapter 2… And then Peter throws in this example…
2 Peter Chapter 2 Verse 11
•This is a reference to the strength and might of Michael who in the Book of Jude faced off against Lucifer and didn’t exert his own authority but when arguing with Lucifer said to him, “The Lord rebuke you.” And so even in the exercising of his own power, he displayed submission and reverence to the will and power of God over his own.
2 Peter Chapter 2 Verses 12 – 17
•Ok, check this out, all of this under-the-surface vision that Peter wants us to have but notice, on the surface, what will they look like? “Natural brute beasts,” strong, impressive, attractive even…, “carousing in the daytime,” having a good time, doing well, smiling, maybe even laughing, cutting up…, “coursing in their own deceptions and feasting with you.” Living it up, man…fully convinced of their own stuff…what’s that look like? Confidence! Is confidence attractive? Absolutely. “Heart trained in covetous practice,” and so they know how to get what they want and they HAVE what they want. They look like wells but no water. They look like clouds, heavenly maybe, but they turn and change, even turn on you like a dime. What’s my point… Man, we gotta be on alert…because a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a false prophet, a narcissist will appeal to almost the entirety of our flesh!
2 Peter Chapter 2 Verses 18 – 22
•THIS. IS. MAJOR. Is Peter saying that a Christian, who knows Christ, is saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit, can be lured by a false prophet to lose their faith and therefore go to hell? No way…in a way, it’s worldy worse than that. If the enemy can’t have your soul, he’ll be just fine to take your life.
•This is a Christian that has been derailed, duped, overcome and entangled and in that turned through deceit to unholiness… Traded holiness for happiness… and now, they’ve lost their marriage, their job, their ministry, their dignity, their self-respect and the respect of others…how do you recover from that? Honest truth, without surrender to the Lord, in a way and in a portion, you don’t. Your recovery, truly, will be in the life to come… And there is an avenue of your heart and life that is forever affected that a person will wrestle with and contend with and have to deal with for the rest of their lives. And this is a primary reason why people leave the ministry and all together, saved and all, stop serving the Lord. Because something about them just no longer fits…in their minds…
•And this is serious to the point that Peter says, it would have been better for them to not have known what was right, having now chosen wrong…, or the internal turmoil of being duped into it all… and the affect is so incredible that although they are saved, they will forever feel like a dog or a pig in the house of God… And that is tragic. Now, God is able to restore but it is drastic and takes a drastic work of humility and repentance in the heart of the victim…possible, just very very difficult.
•Ultimately, knowledge is indeed responsibility. Once you’ve been exposed to the truth, you’re accountable. And the work of the flesh, the world and the enemy is to convince you to walk in the flesh and disregard the truth of God’s Word and God’s will but that path is precisely what ruins a life. Trading holiness for happiness… and most don’t realize it until it’s too late.

2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículo 3
· Codicia, explotación, engaño. Esta es la receta, la prescripción, la consistencia del falso profeta, el gnóstico, el narcisista. Te quieren o algo que puedas hacer por ellos o algo que tengas. Y la razón por la que lo quieren es para explotarlo con el fin de apuntalar y apoyar su verdad personal. Lo que realmente se reduce a hacerlos sentir bien. Dándoles placer. Y para extraer lo que quieren de ti, harán y dirán casi cualquier cosa... Y cuando caes en su trampa, la destrucción no duerme.
· Compara y contrasta eso con lo que Dios no solo te llama, sino que desea para ti a través de Jesucristo. Dios no quiere lo que tenemos para que Él pueda gastarlo en Sí mismo. El deseo de Dios para ti y para mí es que seamos bendecidos con lo que tengamos, ya sea mucho o poco... ¡Dios tiene la bendición de vernos bendecidos! Su deseo es enseñarnos que el gozo no proviene de lo que podemos obtener de los demás, sino de lo que podemos dar a los demás, porque Él nos ha hecho a cada uno con temor, maravilla y a Su imagen, ¡y nos ha mostrado el CAMINO a través de la cruz!
· ¡Dios de ninguna manera quiere explotarte o explotarme para Sus propios propósitos, sino que más bien quiere mostrarnos que Su propósito para nuestra vida es cómo tú y yo vencemos al mundo! Alcanzar nuestro potencial dado por Dios y diseñado por Dios... y encontrar la libertad, la fuerza y la alegría de la mente, el corazón, el cuerpo y el alma. Y no hay engaño en Dios. Él te dirá la verdad de la verdad siempre, incluso cuando nos haga sentir no tan bien ... Porque al final, Él no está preocupado por mi felicidad tanto como se preocupa por mi santidad... La santidad es lo que me hará libre, no momentánea, situacional, circunstancial, circunstancial, costo de felicidad.
· Es difícil, lo sé, apartarse de sí mismo y volverse a Dios porque se necesita fe... se necesita confianza... y hay que hacerse a un lado, pero la decisión es clara... para ser un falso profeta, sírvete a ti mismo... y busca toda tu vida en busca de significado y alegría. O servir al Señor, degradarse y abrazar la cruz de Jesucristo y ser liberado por completo.
2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículos 4–9
· La extracción de estos versículos es que Dios se toma en serio esto... y el destino de los ángeles que pecaron (que cubrimos en profundidad en un estudio anterior – por favor haga referencia al estudio sobre 1 Pedro Capítulo 3 Versículos 13-22), el destino del mundo de los impíos en el tiempo de Noé, el destino de Sodoma y Gomorra, todos estos dan testimonio, advertencia y tipo de lo que va a ser el destino de aquellos que pervierten el evangelio de la gracia y viven después de sí mismos ...
· Sin embargo, no es suficiente, ¿verdad? Como, estos tipos y estas imágenes, todos están allí y, sin embargo, ¡todos los días la gente lastima a las personas a diestra y siniestra en la iglesia al vivir para sí mismas y no para el Señor! ¡Es una locura! Estaba pensando en esto el otro día ... Música de los 80. La música de los 80 estaba allí cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, cuando estaba en la universidad, cuando comencé mi carrera, cuando comenzamos esta iglesia ... y ahora escucho una canción de los 80 y pienso en cómo escuché esto cuando sabía mucho menos y me gustaba... bueno, es simplemente extraño ... muchas cosas eran cognoscibles entonces... como cómo terminaría una relación o el hombre solo pensando en los errores que he cometido en el camino y cómo sería mi vida si simplemente no hubiera tomado esta decisión o aquella decisión, es un pensamiento tan salvaje ... No sé si eso tiene algún sentido... pero para mí, las advertencias y los peligros y los riesgos, no lo suficiente... Por lo tanto, soy empático y, sin embargo, todavía estoy frustrado con aquellos que deciden servirse a sí mismos hoy ...
· Y aquí es donde la gracia, en cierto modo, trabaja un poco en contra de mí / nosotros ... en carne y hueso debo decir. Porque este versículo pone en exhibición que la gracia de Dios y Su misericordia y Su paciencia pueden ser completamente abusadas y confundidas por debilidad, ceguera o incluso aprobación, pero de hecho en ese error, en cierto modo, la gente está sellando su destino. Perder tal vez algo glorioso de Dios que podría haber sido su futuro.
· Y, sin embargo, hay un aliento increíble aquí también de cómo Dios, incluso en medio de todas mis tonterías, carne y, en última instancia, porque ¡Soy Su hijo, salvará y proveerá para mí, no porque yo sea bueno, sino porque Él es bueno! ¿Qué? ¿Dónde? Mira el versículo 7...Lot, mira este descriptor dado para él. Dice aquí: "¡Lot justo!" ¿¡Qué!? Lot escogió dónde viviría, trabajaría, criaría a su familia no basado en la voluntad de Dios, pero dice en Génesis 13:10 que "Lot levantó los ojos y vio toda la llanura del Jordán, que estaba bien regada en todas partes (antes de que el Señor destruyera Sodoma y Gomorra) como el jardín del Señor". sólo que no era el jardín del Señor... Simplemente no levantó los ojos lo suficiente ...
· Y así, se instala en Sodoma, y comienza la vida, cría a su familia... y cuando los ángeles vienen a hablarle en Sodoma, ¿dónde está? Sentado en la puerta de la ciudad. En otras palabras, era un anciano en ese momento de esa ciudad, un líder ... Pero... Nótese, Pedro nos dice que vivir allí y lo que sucedió allí "torturó su alma justa día a día", y así incluso en medio de hacer prácticamente todo lo malo ... ¿¡Dios lo llama justo!? TANTO que decir sobre eso, pero lo suficiente como para simplemente decir esto ... si Lot era justo a los ojos de Dios, ¡tengo una oportunidad! ¡JA!
· Y así como Dios sabe cómo destruir al falso profeta, al malvado y al narcisista, ¡Él sabe cómo salvar a aquellos que su corazón es para el Señor! Incluso si su vida está mal ... eso es Salvaje, ¿verdad? Pero fíjate, justo Lot... que esto sea una advertencia... Música de los 80... tus decisiones, lo que finalmente haces... al ser salvado de Sodoma, LOT LO PERDIÓ TODO... y todo lo que se llevó, sus hijas, bueno, fueron el último legado de vergüenza si conoces la historia... Así que, fíjate, cualidades adicionales de los impíos...
2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículo 10
· Esta sección, realmente hasta el final del capítulo, se vuelve tan descriptiva que no se necesita mucho comentario, pero observe que Pedro iguala caminar de acuerdo con la carne (vivir fuera de conexión con Dios, por Su voluntad, y en oposición a Sus bendiciones) con la impureza y el desprecio de la autoridad. Impureza, déjame preguntarte, te sientes limpio hoy? ¿espiritualmente, emocionalmente, mentalmente limpio? Si tu respuesta es no, entonces estás viviendo fuera de conexión con Dios, fuera de Su voluntad, y en oposición a Sus bendiciones.
· Pero he hecho demasiado, quiero decir, ¿no sabes lo que hice en el camino a la iglesia esta mañana? Ok, 1 Juan 1:9 dice: "Si confesamos nuestro pecado", esa palabra en el griego es "homologeo", y significa "misma lógica", si estamos de acuerdo con Dios al respecto en lugar de justificarlo, desviarlo u ocultarlo, encubrirlo y esperar que desaparezca, pero si reconocemos que el pecado, 1 Juan 1: 9 dice que, “Él es fiel y justo para perdonarnos los pecados y limpiarnos de toda maldad". Entonces, si no te sientes espiritual, emocional, mentalmente limpio hoy ... necesitas correr, esconderte, desviarte, justificar y reconocer tu pecado ante Dios... y luego, estás limpio. De vuelta en conexión con Dios, de vuelta en Su voluntad y de vuelta de acuerdo con la bendición de Dios en tu vida. TANTOS se han metido en un estilo de vida de simplemente vivir impuro y detiene tu crecimiento, te mata la alegría y te hace sin amor ...
· Pedro también vincula caminar de acuerdo con la carne con la autoridad despreciadora, la voluntad propia y la presunción. ¿Cómo se ve eso? ¿Rebelión absoluta? No. Esto es quejarse, morderse la espalda, chismorrear y hablar a espaldas de alguien que Dios ha puesto en tu vida para mantener el orden, azotarte para ponerte en forma y mandarte. ¡Ja! Pero no tendremos una autoridad así, ¿verdad? ¡Somos estadounidenses! Por lo tanto, socavamos la autoridad en nuestras propias mentes al desempeñar un papel cuando están cerca y hablar mal cuando no lo están ... Eso es absolutamente caminar en la carne. Lo siento, la voluntad de Dios es que respetemos la autoridad, ya sea justa o injusta. Volver a 1 Pedro Capítulo 2... Y entonces Pedro pone este ejemplo...
2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículo 11
· Esta es una referencia a la fuerza y el poder de Miguel, quien en el Libro de Judas se enfrentó a Lucifer y no ejerció su propia autoridad, pero al discutir con Lucifer le dijo: "El Señor te reprenda". Y así, incluso en el ejercicio de su propio poder, mostró sumisión y reverencia a la voluntad y el poder de Dios sobre los suyos.
2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículos 12–17
· Ok, echa un vistazo a esto, toda esta visión debajo de la superficie que Pedro quiere que tengamos, pero fíjate, en la superficie, ¿cómo se verán? "Bestias brutas naturales", fuertes, impresionantes, atractivas incluso..., "carrusel durante el día", pasándolo bien, haciéndolo bien, sonriendo, tal vez incluso riendo, disfrutando..., "corriendo en sus propios engaños y festejando contigo". Viviendo, hombre... plenamente convencidos de sus propias cosas... ¿Cómo es eso? ¡Confianza! ¿Es atractiva la confianza? Absolutamente. "Corazón entrenado en la práctica codiciosa", y así saben cómo obtener lo que quieren y TIENEN lo que quieren. Parecen pozos pero no agua. Parecen nubes, celestiales tal vez, pero se vuelven y cambian, incluso se vuelven contra ti como un centavo. ¿Cuál es mi punto ... Hombre, tenemos que estar en alerta... ¡porque un lobo con piel de oveja, un falso profeta, un narcisista apelará a casi la totalidad de nuestra carne!
2 Pedro Capítulo 2 Versículos 18–22
· ÉSTE. Es. DESTACADO. ¿Está pedro diciendo que un cristiano, que conoce a Cristo, es salvo y sellado por el Espíritu Santo, puede ser atraído por un falso profeta para perder su fe y por lo tanto ir al infierno? No es posible... en cierto modo, es peor mundano que eso. Si el enemigo no puede tener tu alma, estará bien con quitarte la vida.
· Este es un cristiano que ha sido descarrilado, engañado, vencido y enredado y en eso se ha convertido a través del engaño a la falta de santidad ... Cambió la santidad por la felicidad... y ahora, han perdido su matrimonio, su trabajo, su ministerio, su dignidad, su autoestima y el respeto de los demás... ¿Cómo te recuperas de eso? La verdad honesta, sin rendirte al Señor, en cierto modo y en porción, no lo haces. Tu recuperación, verdaderamente, estará en la vida venidera... Y hay una avenida de su corazón y su vida que se ve afectada para siempre con la que una persona luchará, luchará y tendrá que lidiar por el resto de sus vidas. Y esta es una razón principal por la cual las personas dejan el ministerio y todos juntos, salvos y todos, dejan de servir al Señor. Porque algo sobre ellos simplemente ya no encaja ... en sus mentes...
· Y esto es grave hasta el punto de que Pedro dice, habría sido mejor para ellos no haber sabido lo que estaba bien, habiendo elegido ahora el mal ..., o la agitación interna de ser engañados en todo esto ... y el afecto es tan increíble que aunque se salven, siempre se sentirán como un perro o un cerdo en la casa de Dios ... Y eso es trágico. Ahora, Dios es capaz de restaurar, pero es drástico y toma una obra drástica de humildad y arrepentimiento en el corazón de la víctima... posible, simplemente muy muy difícil.
· En última instancia, el conocimiento es de hecho responsabilidad. Una vez que has estado expuesto a la verdad, eres responsable. Y la obra de la carne, del mundo y del enemigo es convencerte de que camines en la carne y no tengas en cuenta la verdad de la Palabra de Dios y la voluntad de Dios, pero ese camino es precisamente lo que arruina una vida. Cambiando la santidad por la felicidad... y la mayoría no se da cuenta hasta que es demasiado tarde.
