2 Peter 1 vs 1-2

The second epistle of Peter was written about six years after the first one, most likely around the year A.D. 64, and it appears that Peter wrote this final letter while he was imprisoned in Rome, but we can’t be sure. We are piecing together extra-biblical sources in coming to that conclusion. But we do read in 2 Peter 1:13-15, “Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. Moreover, I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.”

Peter seems to hint at being in imminent danger with these words and according to church tradition, recorded as early as the end of the second century by writers such as Tertullian and then recounted later by Origen and in the writings of Jerome which was in the early fifth century, Peter was arrested and executed by Nero, in Rome, around A.D. 64, right around the time this letter was written. As most are aware, Peter was crucified however at his own request, he was crucified upside down, in a final showing of honor towards his hero, Jesus Christ, not wanting to be made equal with him, but rather to show that Jesus was much greater than he.

So, we conclude and accept that this letter was perhaps written even on the eve of his execution, from Rome, around A.D. 64. And interestingly, Jesus told him this day would come in John 21:18-19, “Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.””

So, there is a bit more gravity given to this letter considering the condition, situation and place Peter most likely had written it from, and he opens by identifying himself as the author, giving his full name (as it were), “Simon Peter…”

2 Peter Chapter 1 Verse 1
•I LOVE how Peter identifies/names himself! If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, all things have passed away, behold all things are made new. Paul wrote this in 2 Corinthians 5:17 and every new and true believer knows this to be the case because God has truly done a new thing in their hearts and they are entirely changed and incredibly free from the weight and the guilt of sin…however, as Peter hints here, as you age in the Lord, you grow a bit, mature a bit, and who you were before Christ, rather than hating that person so much, you begin to pity your former self…and with that pity, comes forgiveness.
•Here Peter is at the end of his life, all that Jesus has done, all that he remembers, all that the Lord has shown him, all the ways God has used him, and in the end, he says essentially, I am complete…Simon and Peter…one forgiven, one fully furnished with the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ…both and every part of me at peace. He doesn’t reject and abandon who he was before Christ, he redeems that man, accepts and forgives even himslef…and I like that.
•Nothing is lost in Christ. It’s not like before God nothing mattered…everything mattered, and now that I know the Lord, through the grace of God, even the previous version of me somehow remains and yet now is unto the glory of God because of what He has done, where He has brought me from and to…and Simon is not to be hidden, but to be redeemed and energized unto testimony of the power of the cross!
•And different than his first epistle, Peter introduces himself as not just an apostle of Jesus Christ, but he introduces himself first as a bondservant of Jesus Christ. There truly is no greater compliment or office than to be characterized as a bondservant of the Lord. A bondservant was a slave that had been freed, but because of their love for their master, they make a personal decision to remain a servant, even after being liberated, for the rest of their lives.
•This is oddly enough and counter-intuitively enough, the greatest positions of freedom and the highest possible honor attainable in this life. That Peter has made a personal decision to stay with and serve under the Lord. Just contemplate one element of that for a moment. What do you think the bond between master and servant is…? When they both know…they both know…no doubt its awesome. And to serve the Lord, the One, the King of Kings…not because you are commanded or demanded to, but because you love Him and He loves you…there is no greater position or office out there…
•Some introduce themselves or title themselves as “Apostle,” and with it they expect respect and they are communicating some sort of spiritual authority, but it’s all entirely bankrupt. Holy and heavenly respect and spiritual authority are derived from the office and decision of bondservant far before and far more than the office and title of apostle. And truly, if you are not first a bondservant, then you are by no means a true apostle, because your service to the Lord is out of obligation, not admiration and personal relation.
•And he writes this final letter to the faithful. To the righteous. To the Body and Bride of Christ and verse 1, within it alone, is wrapped the entirety of the gospel of Jesus Christ. How is it that you and I, that anyone ever obtains the most costly, valuable, expensive, precious thing that could ever be obtained? Complete forgiveness of sin and eternal life. Freedom from the power and penalty of sin and free to live unto God and life filled with love, joy, peace and power? How is it that you and I obtain that?
•Hard work. Dedication. Studying. Practicing. Praying. Serving. Fixing. Being perfect in all that we do… Not at all. AT ALL! Peter lays it out for us and this is the best news from the best Master who while I was yet lost in my sin, Jesus gave His life for me, securing what I could not secure for myself…and so it is simply and only, “by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ,” that I have miraculously and finally and firmly accessed EXTREMELY costly FAITH!
•I can’t buy it. I can’t earn it. I can’t learn it. I can’t achieve it. I can only receive it. If heaven isn’t a gift, then none of us are getting in! I have so sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and when face to face with Him how can I not hide my eyes in shame…? That’s all I can do on my own. But because of the righteousness of Jesus, placed in my place upon the altar of judgement, the cross, I have no more cause to hide my eyes from my Creator and Holy and Righteous judge…because by faith, because of God’s goodness and grace, my sin has been paid, dealt with, I am forgiven and free! And therefore…
2 Peter Chapter 1 Verse 2
•Grace and peace multiplied… it’s a packaged deal and you need to know this. With faith, with true faith and receiving the righteousness of Jesus Christ, comes grace and comes peace. Grace flows to you and in you and ultimately through you and peace settles you in your heart of hearts in terms of who you are…
•That’s why Peter says here, “In the knowledge of our God and of Jesus our Lord…” To know Him is to receive grace and to receive peace! There are so many ideas and things said and things taught about who God is, what He’s like, what He expects, what Jesus did and who He is…but do you know Him yourself!? That’s the word Peter uses here, not just head knowledge but personal finding-out, experiential knowledge…is that how you know Jesus?
•So much of what is taught about God casts a shadow of condemnation and performance-based perfection…man, perfection is just perfection or its not perfection! And by the blood of Jesus, because of WHO God is, you have been welcomed and accepted and cleansed and perfected even in His sight NOW!
•SO, grace MULTIPLIED to you! Dance in it, man! Peace MULTIPLIED to you! The shadow cast by the true cross of Christ is one of freedom and love and grace and finality…that’s it! So set aside every voice of man and listen to the voice of God… GET TO KNOW HIM personally. You’ll become His bondservant…, “Oh, I don’t want to be someone’s slave…!” FOOLISH. Yes, you do! The best Master, the best home, the best job, the best provision, the best bond… YEA YOU DO. Your flesh just cannot ever agree… I get that. That’s the nature of your flesh. But in Jesus you and I have access to a second nature, having been born again by the Spirit of God (which we will talk about next week)! And so it is by faith, a work of the Spirit, an agreement by my ego, (my own self will), and a gift of Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith…it is by faith you obtain what is precious and best!


La segunda epístola de Pedro fue escrita unos seis años después de la primera, muy probablemente alrededor del año 64 d.C., y parece que Pedro escribió esta última carta mientras estaba encarcelado en Roma, pero no podemos estar seguros. Pedro parece insinuar estar en peligro inminente con estas palabras y, de acuerdo con la tradición de la iglesia, registradas ya a finales del siglo II por escritores como Tertuliano y luego relatadas más tarde por Orígenes y en los escritos de Jerónimo, que fue a principios del siglo V, Pedro fue arrestado y ejecutado por Nerón, en Roma, alrededor del año 64 d.C., justo en el momento en que se escribió esta carta. 2 Pedro Capítulo 1 Versículo 1
· ¡ME ENCANTA cómo Peter se identifica / se nombra a sí mismo! Si alguien está en Cristo, es una nueva creación, todas las cosas han pasado, he aquí que todas las cosas son hechas nuevas. Pablo escribió esto en 2 Corintios 5:17 y cada creyente nuevo y verdadero sabe que este es el caso porque Dios realmente ha hecho algo nuevo en sus corazones y están completamente cambiados e increíblemente libres del peso y la culpa del pecado ... sin embargo, como Pedro insinúa aquí, a medida que envejeces en el Señor, creces un poco, maduras un poco, y quién eras antes de Cristo, en lugar de odiar tanto a esa persona, comienzas a compadecerte de tu antiguo yo ... y con esa tristeza, viene el perdón.
· Aquí Pedro está al final de su vida, todo lo que Jesús ha hecho, todo lo que recuerda, todo lo que el Señor le ha mostrado, todas las formas en que Dios lo ha usado, y al final, dice esencialmente, estoy completo ... Simón y Pedro... uno perdonado, uno completamente provisto de la justicia de Dios por medio de Jesucristo... ambos y cada parte de mí en paz. No rechaza ni abandona lo que era antes de Cristo, redime a ese hombre, acepta y se perdona incluso a él mismo ... y eso me gusta.
· Nada se pierde en Cristo. No es que antes de Dios nada importara... todo importaba, y ahora que conozco al Señor, por la gracia de Dios, incluso la versión anterior de mí de alguna manera permanece y, sin embargo, ahora es para la gloria de Dios debido a lo que Él ha hecho, de donde Él me ha traído y a donde... ¡y Simón no debe ser escondido, sino ser redimido y energizado para dar testimonio del poder de la cruz!
· Y a diferencia de su primera epístola, Pedro se presenta no solo como un apóstol de Jesucristo, sino que se presenta primero como un siervo de Jesucristo. Verdaderamente no hay mayor cumplido u oficio que ser caracterizado como un siervo del Señor. Un siervo era un esclavo que había sido liberado, pero debido a su amor por su amo, toman la decisión personal de seguir siendo sirvientes, incluso después de ser liberados, por el resto de sus vidas.
· Esto es, curiosamente y contraintuitivamente, las mayores posiciones de libertad y el más alto honor posible alcanzable en esta vida. Que Pedro ha tomado la decisión personal de quedarse y servir bajo el Señor. Basta con contemplar un elemento de eso por un momento. ¿Cuál crees que es el vínculo entre amo y siervo...? Cuando ambos saben... ambos saben... sin duda es impresionante. Y para servir al Señor, al Uno, al Rey de Reyes... no porque se te ordene o se te exija, sino porque lo amas, Él te ama... no hay mayor posición u oficina por ahí...
· Algunos se presentan o se titulan a sí mismos como "Apóstol", y con ello esperan respeto y están comunicando algún tipo de autoridad espiritual, pero todo está completamente en bancarrota. El respeto santo y celestial y la autoridad espiritual se derivan del oficio y la decisión del siervo mucho antes y mucho más que el oficio y el título de apóstol. Y en verdad, si no eres primero un siervo, entonces de ninguna manera eres un verdadero apóstol, porque tu servicio al Señor es por obligación, no por admiración y relación personal.
· Y escribe esta última carta a los fieles. A los justos. Al Cuerpo y a la Esposa de Cristo y al versículo 1, sólo dentro de él, está envuelto la totalidad del evangelio de Jesucristo. ¿Cómo es que tú y yo, que alguien alguna vez obtiene la cosa más costosa, valiosa, cara, preciosa que se pueda obtener? Perdón completo de los pecados y de la vida eterna. ¿Libertad del poder y la pena del pecado y libertad para vivir para Dios y vida llena de amor, gozo, paz y poder? ¿Cómo es que tú y yo obtenemos eso?
· Trabajo duro. Dedicación. Estudiando. Practicando. Orando. Sirviendo. Arreglando. Ser perfectos en todo lo que hacemos...En absoluto. ¡EN ABSOLUTO! Pedro nos los expone, y esta es la mejor noticia del mejor Maestro que mientras yo estaba perdido en mi pecado, Jesús dio su vida por mí, asegurando lo que yo no podía asegurar para mí mismo... y así es simple y únicamente, "por la justicia de nuestro Dios y Salvador Jesucristo", que he accedido milagrosa y final y firmemente a la FE EXTREMADAMENTE costosa!
· No puedo comprarlo. No puedo ganármelo. No puedo aprenderlo. No puedo lograrlo. Solo puedo recibirlo. Si el cielo no es un regalo, ¡entonces ninguno de nosotros puede entrar! He pecado tanto y he estado destituido de la gloria de Dios y cuando me encuentro cara a cara con Él, ¿cómo no voy a esconder mis ojos avergonzado...? Eso es todo lo que puedo hacer por mi cuenta. Pero debido a la justicia de Jesús, colocada en mi lugar sobre el altar del juicio, la cruz, no tengo más motivos para esconder mis ojos de mi Creador y Juez Santo y Justo... porque por fe, por la bondad y gracia de Dios, mi pecado ha sido pagado, y esta resuelto, ¡soy perdonado y libre! Y por lo tanto...
2 Pedro Capítulo 1 Versículo 2
· La gracia y la paz se multiplicaron... es un trato empaquetado y necesitas saber esto. Con la fe, con la verdadera fe y recibiendo la justicia de Jesucristo, viene la gracia y viene la paz. La gracia fluye hacia ti y en ti y, en última instancia, a través de ti y la paz te instala en lo más profundo de tu corazón, en términos de quién Tu eres...
· Es por eso que Pedro dice aquí: "En el conocimiento de nuestro Dios y de Jesús nuestro Señor..." ¡Conocerlo es recibir gracia y recibir paz! Hay tantas ideas y cosas dichas y cosas enseñadas acerca de quién es Dios, cómo es, qué espera, qué hizo Jesús y quién es Él... pero ¿¡tú mismo lo conoces!? Esa es la palabra que Pedro usa aquí, no solo conocimiento de la cabeza, sino descubrimiento personal, conocimiento experiencial ... ¿Es así como conoces a Jesús?
· Mucho de lo que se enseña acerca de Dios proyecta una sombra de condenación y perfección basada en el desempeño... hombre, ¡la perfección es solo perfección o no es perfección! ¡Y por la sangre de Jesús, debido a QUIÉN es Dios, has sido bienvenido y aceptado y limpiado y perfeccionado incluso delante de Sus ojos AHORA!
· ¡ENTONCES, la gracia SE MULTIPLICÓ para ti! ¡Baila en ella, hombre! ¡La paz se multiplicó para ti! La sombra proyectada por la verdadera cruz de Cristo es una sombra de libertad, amor, gracia y finalidad... ¡Eso es todo! Así que deja a un lado toda voz del hombre y escucha la voz de Dios... CONÓCELO personalmente. Te convertirás en Su siervo..., "¡Oh, no quiero ser esclavo de alguien...!" TONTO. ¡Sí, lo quieres! El mejor Maestro, el mejor hogar, el mejor trabajo, la mejor provisión, el mejor vínculo... SÍ, LO QUIERES. Tu carne simplemente no puede estar de acuerdo ... Lo entiendo. Esa es la naturaleza de tu carne. ¡Pero en Jesús tú y yo tenemos acceso a una segunda naturaleza, habiendo nacido de nuevo por el Espíritu de Dios (del cual hablaremos la próxima semana)! Y así es por la fe, una obra del Espíritu, un acuerdo de mi ego, (mi propia voluntad), y un don de Jesús, el Autor y Consumador de nuestra fe... ¡es por la fe que obtienes lo que es precioso y mejor!
